The market for the 4.10 at Newbury is headed by the exciting Nabati, but at the current prices I am happy to oppose the favourite and side with **Sale Shark at around 6.0**.

Nabati could undoubtedly be a very good colt. The 850,000-yearling looked the part on his debut at Yarmouth, travelling strongly before quickening clear with plenty left in the tank. He is bred to be useful, represents the powerful Charlie Appleby and Godolphin combination, and the same connections won this race last year with Wise Approach.

However, he has had only one start and is being asked to take a significant step forward in both class and depth. His Yarmouth victory was visually impressive, but this is a much stronger examination and the market is already pricing in a large amount of improvement.

By contrast, **Sale Shark brings proven high-level form to the table**.

Hugo Palmer’s colt created a strong impression when winning on debut at Hamilton. Despite being held up by a sore shin earlier in the season, he was well supported against more experienced rivals and justified that confidence in decisive fashion. He was steadied early, travelled comfortably and showed an excellent turn of foot to put the race to bed entering the final furlong.

The most encouraging aspect of that performance was the suggestion that six furlongs would suit him even better.

Sale Shark then stepped straight into the furnace of the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot. His preparation was far from ideal after briefly losing Kieran Shoemark on the way to the start, but he behaved professionally once the race began and produced a highly creditable performance.

Drawn on the far side, he travelled smoothly, moved into contention two furlongs from home and finished strongest in his group. He was effectively the best horse racing on that side of the track, making it difficult to know exactly where he would have finished with the benefit of a more favourable draw.

The bare finishing position of fifth therefore understates the merit of the run.

Sale Shark also shaped as though today’s longer distance would be firmly in his favour. He was doing his best work late at Ascot and possesses the combination of speed and stamina needed to be effective over six furlongs.

His pedigree backs that up. By Bayside Boy, he is closely related to seven-furlong juvenile winner Jacinth and a half-brother to several winners, including the very smart sprinter Ekhtiyaar and the useful New Providence.

Nabati may ultimately prove to have the greater ceiling, but he will need to improve considerably from his debut to justify his position at the head of the market. Sale Shark has already demonstrated that he can compete in one of the strongest juvenile sprints of the season and still appears open to further progress.

Arapaho Gold deserves respect after winning both of his starts, while Norfolk Stakes fourth Social Symbol brings another solid piece of Royal Ascot form. However, the two most likely winners are Sale Shark and Nabati, and I do not believe there should be a significant gap between them in the betting.

At around **6.0**, Sale Shark looks the solid value play.
