The Sussex Stakes is the race that will define this week for us. Everything else on the card is a supporting act — and I mean that in the most practical sense, because the discipline that matters today is knowing which races to leave alone.

There are seven proper races on the Sussex Downs this afternoon. I'm previewing six. The 5.00 handicap is a twenty-eight runner cavalry charge and I have no useful opinion on it whatsoever, so I'm not going to manufacture one. A blank is a position.

What follows is the tissue price our model produced for each selection, set against the exchange price available as I write. Where the market is shorter than our number, there's no bet, however much I like the horse. That is the whole method.

---

## 1.50 — Hatteen (Tissue 4.0)

Our top-rated runner, and a horse going the right way fast.

He was bought as a yearling for 120,000gns, and he's the first foal of a lightly-raced mare who traces back to a useful French miler. The pedigree suggested he'd want a trip. He confirmed it twenty days ago at Doncaster, taking a valuable eight-runner novice by four and a quarter lengths from According To Mark and pulling right away in the closing stages.

Two things stand out about that run. He'd been off for eight weeks and settled far better than he had previously, and he did it over a trip two furlongs further on ground quicker than anything he'd tackled before. That's a horse learning his job in public.

He goes into a handicap off a mark of 82, and that mark looks light. The assessor will have him next time.

**The problem: he's 3.85 on the exchange against our 4.0 tissue.** The market has already worked this out. He's rated the best horse in the race by our numbers and I expect him to run well — but there's no value in the price, so he stays a watching brief rather than a bet.

## 2.25 — Wild Blossom (Tissue 2.2)

Here the market has it wrong, and this is where we start.

A 300,000gns breeze-up purchase who absolutely bolted up on debut in a Carlisle novice over five furlongs on soft ground in May. She then went to the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot and finished tenth, which reads badly and isn't.

She did far more than was ideal in the early stages of that race, went off much too hard on the front end, and had nothing left when it mattered. Her physique and her page both promise a good deal more than she showed. Stables of this quality don't send a filly of that value to Royal Ascot on a whim.

Our tissue is 2.2\. She's available at 2.68.

**That's a clear overlay on a filly with an obvious excuse last time and considerable scope.** Strong confidence rating, comfortable margin over the second-best in the race. This is the first proper bet of the day.

---

## 3.00 — Planet Seeker (Tissue 5.8)

An interesting race, because our model has two fillies within a whisker of each other and the market has priced them very differently.

**Sayidah Dariyan** is the one everyone will be on. She won the Group 3 Summer Stakes at York last July, was fourth in the Commonwealth Cup, ran respectably when third of nine to Flora Of Bermuda on her return at Newmarket, and was beaten only two and a half lengths into ninth of eighteen in the Jubilee at Royal Ascot last month. She drops in grade and Ryan Moore takes the ride. Our tissue makes her 5.6.

**She's trading at 4.7.** Shorter than our number. No bet, and I'd be against her at that price.

**Planet Seeker** is the one I want. She made a winning debut over six furlongs at this track last August, was still green when third in the Group 3 Dick Poole at Salisbury three weeks later, and then went to Newmarket eighteen days ago for her handicap debut over seven and won it with a great deal in hand, beating Machadadorp and quickening clear off a mark nobody thought much of beforehand.

I rated that performance highly at the time and I haven't revised it down. She looked a filly who will win in Pattern company before the season is out.

Tissue 5.8, available at 7.4\. **That's the bet.**

---

## 3.35 — Pershaada (Tissue 4.2)

A genuinely open sprint, and I'd rather say so than pretend otherwise.

Pershaada is our top rated and she has a strong case. An 88,000gns yearling, third foal, closely related to a juvenile six-furlong winner, she got off the mark over course and distance in May and then ran a cracking fourth of twenty-seven in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot, staying on well through the field. That's form good enough to win this.

But she's 4.2 on the exchange against a 4.2 tissue but our confidence rating on the race is marginal — the gap between the top-rated and the pack is the narrowest of the day.

**No bet.** Adonius and Ruler's Pride both look marginally overpriced against our numbers if you want a small interest, but I'm sitting this one out. Open handicaps at Goodwood cost more money than they make.

## 4.10 — BOW ECHO (Tissue 1.9) — MAX BET

The Sussex Stakes, and the race of the week.

Bow Echo is unbeaten in five. He won the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on his return in a manner that left very little doubt about his class, then made it five from five in the St James's Palace at Royal Ascot, holding off Gstaad.

The Ascot run is the one being used against him, and I think that's a misreading. He was hampered early, got briefly lit up as a result, and was forced far wider than ideal turning in. He still picked up sharply, loomed up two out, hit the front inside the final furlong and held on. He won a Group 1 having had the race fall apart around him. His superiority over Gstaad at Newmarket is the truer line, and it was considerable.

He's a strong traveller, he's raced only at a mile, and he handles good to firm. Everything about today suits.

Our tissue is **1.9\. He's 2.2 on the exchange.**

**Maximum bet.** We have him a long way clear on ratings — the widest margin over the second-rated of any race on the card, by some distance. This is the strongest confidence signal our model has produced today, and I'm not hedging it. This race probably makes or breaks the week for us.

---

## 5.40 — Rhoscolyn (Tissue 12.4) — Each-Way, Small Stakes

Our last selection, and a sentimental one that also happens to be sound.

Rhoscolyn is a course specialist of the old-fashioned kind. He landed the Golden Mile here last summer off a BHA mark of 96 — his sixth win at Goodwood. He's had breathing operations, he stays a mile, and he acts on virtually anything.

He's been a mixed bag since, but he confirmed he retains his ability when fifth of eight at Thirsk in April, and his last two runs both read worse than they were. He was badly hampered under two furlongs out last time and never recovered, and the jockey sensibly didn't persevere once the race was gone. He's dropped in the weights since.

Tissue 12.4, available at **17.0**. That's a substantial overlay.

**The caveat: this is our tightest race on ratings all afternoon.** The margin between Rhoscolyn and the next horse is under a point, which is why this is an each-way play to small stakes and not a win bet. Take the value, respect the uncertainty.

## The Card At A Glance

| Time | Selection | Tissue | Price | Play |
| ---- | ------------- | ------ | ----- | ---------------------------- |
| 1.50 | Hatteen | 4.0 | 3.85 | **No bet** — under our price |
| 2.25 | Wild Blossom | 2.2 | 2.68 | **Bet** |
| 3.00 | Planet Seeker | 5.8 | 7.4 | **Bet** |
| 3.35 | Pershaada | 4.2 | 4.2 | **No bet** — open race |
| 4.10 | **Bow Echo** | 1.9 | 2.2 | **MAX BET** |
| 5.40 | Rhoscolyn | 12.4 | 17.0 | **Each-way, small stakes** |

Three bets, one maximum, one each-way nibble, two passes and one race ignored entirely. Six of the seven previewed, four of them left alone.

That ratio is the point. Every price above was checked against a tissue built before I looked at the market, and where the market had already found the horse, we walked away — including from our own top-rated runner in the opener. The discipline isn't in finding winners. It's in refusing to bet the ones you like at the wrong price.

Prices quoted are Betfair exchange prices at the time of writing and will move. If the value has gone by the time you read this, the bet has gone with it.

Good luck.
