## Yesterday

Three winners from six bets, and a day that turned on execution rather than selection.

Enceladus took the Gordon Stakes, struck at 3.20 and returning 2.68\. Supplicate justified the faith at Nottingham despite drifting all afternoon, returning 3.25\. And Exclusive Code landed the closing handicap in the manner of a horse whose connections knew exactly what they had — berthed on the wrong side in the Britannia, handed the plum draw this time and taking full advantage under a fine ride, disputing the lead, going on after three furlongs and quickening clear entering the final furlong. He had the race sewn up before the others started to motor home, beating Zennor Storm and Euston Hall.

That one is worth dwelling on, because of what happened to his price. He was 6.80 available in the morning, 6.00 by the time we struck, and returned **3.60**. Backing at target captured a price two-thirds better than the market settled at. It is the third steamer this week where firing early beat the starting price handsomely, against one drifter — Supplicate — where waiting would have paid. A pattern is starting to form and we are logging it rather than acting on it yet.

Against that: Flann Sunna, the maximum bet and the widest margin on the card at 5.2 points clear, was well beaten after being backed into 2.14\. Mia Fantasia was held up, met trouble and was carried right inside the final furlong without ever getting into it. Compensation awaits. And Chantelle was second at Epsom behind Trio, taking another small step forward on turf debut after five months off despite never looking at ease on the track — she edged right two out, led briefly inside the final furlong and kept on, but looked less suited than the winner to a test of pure speed.

Two things worth recording rather than glossing over. Ciarrai Abu, whom we rated best in the opening handicap and passed on price at 5.30 against a fair price of 6.64, unseated his rider before the start, galloped off riderless, was reloaded and won at 5.29\. Our reasoning for staying away was the price and a thin 1.6-point margin, and that reasoning was sound. The outcome was not. Both can be true.

And in the Nassau, our own model gave Diamond Necklace, Botagoz and Friendly Soul ability ratings of 124 apiece and separated the top two by a tenth of a point. Diamond Necklace won comfortably from Friendly Soul. Botagoz, whom the expectation column flagged as a 179% overlay at 18.5, never landed a blow. The no-bet was right, and right for the stated reason: when a model cannot separate a race, its price signals inside that race are noise.

## First, the ground

**Goodwood is good to firm, good in places, GoingStick 7.3, watered, and sunny.** That is a touch quicker than yesterday's reading of 7.0 and it matches the input our conditions model ran on, so nothing needs discounting today.

Stalls are centre for the five and six furlong races, outside for the one mile three, and inside for the rest. That matters most in the King George over the minimum trip, where the draw did for our selection at Royal Ascot last month.

## How to read today's selections

Two numbers do the work, and both gates have to open.

**Clear-by margin** — how far our top-rated is clear of the second horse on the composite rating. Above 6 with everything else aligned is a maximum bet at 5 points. Above 5 is 3 points. Two to five is 2 points. Below two is 1 point. Below one, the model is telling us it cannot separate the principals.

**EV** — the available price against our fair price. Nothing gets backed below 5%.

A point is half a percent of bank. A big edge on a horse we can barely separate from the second favourite is not a bet, and a horse seven points clear at the wrong price is not a bet either.

Today produces something unusual: **three bets, all of them a single point, and every one of them from our lowest confidence tier.** Not one selection on the card is a horse we rate clearly above its rivals. All three are here because a price drifted far enough to make a thin opinion worth a small stake — which is a very different thing from a fancy, and we would rather say so than dress it up.

## 13:50 — Coral Goodwood Handicap (Class 2, 3yo+ 0-105, 2m4½f)

**Top rated: Valiancy. Fair 5.27, target 6.00, available 4.30\. NO BET.**

Eight and a half points clear — the second-widest margin on the card — and we cannot touch him.

William Haggas's gelding was an eye-catching sixth of sixteen in the Copper Horse at Royal Ascot, and the way he did it is the whole case. He came from a long way back, was forced to take a trip around the houses and ended up widest of all, pushed along three out and keeping on well from two without ever getting on terms. Timeform's own note on that run said he would prove as effective at two miles, that there is a major staying handicap with his name on it this season, and that the one over this trip at Goodwood was likely to be on his agenda. This is that race.

He is a good-topped gelding suited by at least two miles, acts on good to firm, races off the pace and responds generously to pressure. He won stylishly at Hamilton over thirteen furlongs in May and returns in refitted cheekpieces under James Doyle.

None of which is a secret. He was 3.50 overnight, 4.20 at half three this morning and 4.30 now, with over eighteen thousand pounds matched. We need 6.00\. The gap has not moved all morning and it is not going to.

**We need 6.00\. He is 4.30.**

*Notebook:* **Kentucky River** is our second-rated at 16.34 fair against 20 available — a 22% overlay that is above its own target price, drifting, with real money traded. If we ever arm the second-rated, this is the shape of bet it would be.

## 14:25 — HKJC World Pool Thoroughbred Stakes (Group 3, 3yo, 1m, 7 runners)

**Top rated: Talk Of New York. Fair 1.54, target 1.59, available 1.48\. NO BET.**

Thirteen points clear — the widest margin we have recorded all week — and now a negative expectation, which is a neat illustration of why margin alone tells you very little.

Charlie Appleby's colt was third of six to Bow Echo in the St James's Palace Stakes last month, beaten under two lengths, having sweated up beforehand, been hampered early, raced freely as a result and still been there with every chance inside the final furlong. The horse who beat him won Wednesday's Sussex and became the first since Frankel to complete the Guineas–St James's Palace–Sussex treble. He has benefited from a hood, won the Heron Stakes in May, and William Buick rides. On our numbers he is far and away the best horse in the race.

He has also been backed from 1.57 into **1.48** on nearly sixty thousand pounds, which puts him 4% *below* our fair price. A thirteen-point margin on an odds-on shot is an easy margin to achieve — the composite gap widens naturally as the field weakens beneath a short-priced favourite, and it tells you less than six points would at 4/1.

**We rarely bet odds-on and we do not bet negative expectation.** Watch and enjoy him win.

*Notebook:* **Saber Strike** has drifted from 6.0 to 11 and is a 22% overlay on fair value, though still short of his own target. First-time blinkers and a first try at a mile for a colt whose closing three furlongs at York were the fastest in the race.

## 15:00 — Coral Golden Mile (Heritage Handicap, Class 2, 1m)

**BET: Scoville. 1 point. Fair 8.32, target 8.60, available 9.60\. Clear by 1.6.**

First, the withdrawal. **Beagle Bay is a non-runner.** He was our only real bet on this card — three points at 6.00 against a fair price of 4.36, and the first horse to reach the qualifying conditions for a maximum bet under the new staking scheme. He never got to the liquidity and time gates that resolve inside the final hour - declared a non-runner.

Removing a horse we made a 23% chance from a twenty-runner book redistributes that probability across everyone else, so the tissue has been rebuilt rather than adjusted. And it has produced a bet — a small one, with a caveat attached that we want to put before the selection rather than after it.

**Scoville is only top-rated because Beagle Bay came out, and he leads by 1.6 points, which is our lowest tier.** An hour ago he was second-rated and a no-bet. We are backing him because his price clears his target, not because we have a strong view.

The case is decent. William Haggas's gelding had a breathing operation during a ten-week break and was refitted with a tongue strap for his handicap debut in the Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot, where he was seventh of twenty-eight, beaten under four lengths. The bare result flatters nobody; the detail does. He led overall, took a strong hold, was shaken up two out, was headed a furlong from home but still led his group entering the final hundred yards, and kept on. He was comfortably the best of those who forced the pace — third home in his group — and Timeform's note reads that he looks back to the horse who made such a striking impression early in his career and is just the type to pick up a good prize.

He is a 200,000gns half-brother to Soulcombe and Solomon, out of a Prix Jean Romanet winner, best up to a mile, acts on good to firm, and usually races prominently. Tom Marquand rides. The draw is not ideal.

At 9.60 against a fair price of 8.32 that is a 15% overlay and it clears his target of 8.60.

**One point. That is the correct size for a horse we cannot separate from the second favourite.**

*Notebook:* Indalo and Tribal Chief are both a third shorter than we make them.

## 15:35 — King George Qatar Stakes (Group 2, 5f, 15 runners)

**Top rated: Night Raider. Fair 5.37, target 6.20, available 3.95\. NO BET.**

K R Burke's gelding is our number one and we are watching this one.

The gelding operation before his reappearance has evidently made a real difference — he dominated a Group 3 at Newmarket and overcame a tardy start to take the Temple Stakes at Haydock. At Royal Ascot he was tenth of twenty-six in the King Charles III, but he broke well, showed his early pace, and was simply scuppered by a low draw, still finishing best of those on his side. Timeform's read is that he almost certainly remains at the top of his game.

We agree. We do not agree with 3.95 against a fair price of 5.37\. The stalls are centre today, which removes the excuse that cost him at Ascot, and that is exactly why he is this price.

*Notebook:* **American Affair** is 21 against a fair price of 13.04, a 61% overlay on a horse who won a Group 1 at Royal Ascot last summer and was a length second to today's favourite in the Temple Stakes. He has pulled too hard and been badly drawn since. Not armed, because our staking only ever backs the top-rated.

## 16:10 — Regent Seven Seas Cruises Bentinck Conditions Stakes (Class 2, 4yo+, 1m1f, 9 runners)

**Top rated: Galen. Clear by 1.3\. NO BET.**

Joseph O'Brien's gelding leads our ratings by a point and a third, which is inside noise, and he is 4.60 against a fair price of 5.08\. Haatem is 4.30 against our 4.93 — also short. Nothing here clears both gates.

With Galen, Boiling Point and Naqeeb all in the line-up this will not be falsely run. Good to watch, nothing to back.

## 16:45 — Hawes & Curtis Nursery Handicap (Class 2, 2yo, 6f, 18 runners)

**BET: Innichen. 1 point. Fair 5.68, target 5.90, available 7.60\. Clear by 2.0.**

The best price move on the card, and a lesson in not chasing.

At half three this morning Innichen was 5.70 against a target of 5.90 — a tick short. We then raised our price floor from 3% to 5% over fair value, which pushed his target to 6.00 and moved him further out of reach. He has since drifted to **7.60**.

Had we bent the rule at breakfast we would have taken 5.90\. By holding it we get 7.60, which is a 34% overlay rather than a 4% one. That is luck rather than skill — the drift had nothing to do with our floor — but it is a fair illustration of what a price discipline is for.

Jack Channon's colt justified favouritism on his nursery bow at Nottingham after nine weeks off, suited by the longer trip, picking up well from off the pace out wide to lead inside the final furlong and being ridden out. The horse who finished third that day has since franked the form. Tom Marquand rides and he bids for a hat-trick.

He is two points clear of Clash Of Hearts and no more, which keeps him in our lowest tier however good the price looks.

**One point at 5.90 or better. The stake follows the margin, not the overlay.**

*Notebook:* **Clash Of Hearts** at 9.60 against a fair price of 8.20 is a 17% overlay in his own right.

## 17:20 — World Pool Bet With The Tote Handicap (Class 3, 1m3f44y)

**Top rated: Astracornus. Clear by 1.0\. NO BET.**

David Menuisier's colt shaped very well when just failing at Newbury from a six-pound higher mark, and the step up in trip should suit. Saffie Osborne rides.

But one point of separation is no separation, and 6.80 against a fair price of 7.63 is 11% the wrong way.

*Notebook:* **Pierian** has drifted from 6.0 to 9.2 against a fair price of 7.66 and is above her own target — a 20% overlay on a Haggas filly making her handicap bow. Second-rated, so not armed.

## 17:55 — Fillies' Handicap (Class 2, 1m1f197y)

**Top rated: Silver Lake. Fair 2.57, target 2.66, available 2.58\. WATCH — needs 2.66.**

The closest thing to a fourth bet, and it has been agonisingly close all morning: 2.52 overnight, 2.58 at half three, 2.58 now.

William Haggas's filly looked a different animal fitted with a tongue tie at Salisbury, sustaining her effort to run down the pace-setting runner-up and improving well beyond her opening mark. The line that matters: she looks the type who will be even better served by a well-run race in a bigger field — and having won a five-runner race last time, today she gets exactly that. A two-pound rise looks lenient and Saffie Osborne rides.

Three ticks short. **Needs 2.66.**

Room Fourteen is the danger and is also a shade short of our number at 3.30 against 3.26.

## Away from Goodwood

**BET: Mighty Magnus, 19:25 Musselburgh (Class 4, 5f). 1 point. Fair 3.82, target 3.95, available 5.20.**

Michael Dodds's gelding is a course-and-distance winner from June who was well backed at Newmarket last time and shaped considerably better than third of eight suggests — he got upset in the stalls beforehand, was hampered as he broke, was switched under two out and ran on late from an impossible position. He is four pounds above his Musselburgh winning mark, which is not beyond him.

He has drifted from 3.50 to **5.20**, a 36% overlay. But he is two-tenths of a point clear of the second-rated, which is no margin at all, and barely two hundred pounds has been matched. The evening markets will not be worth reading until much later.

**One point at 3.95 or better, and watch the market form.**

Nikovo in the 19:32 at Newmarket has been backed from 5.20 into 4.70 against a fair price of 5.68\. No bet.

| 19:32 Newmarket | Nikovo | 0.3 | 1pt | 5.68 | 6.20 | 4.70 | **−17%** | **No bet** |

**Confirmed exposure: 3 points — 1.5% of bank, all of it in our lowest tier.** A further 2 points are live if Silver Lake reaches 2.66\. No maximum-bet candidate survives on the card. Prices are Betfair exchange at 09:00 and will move all day.

One note on those targets. We raised our price floor this morning from 3% to 5% over fair value, so it agrees with the minimum edge we publish. Previously a horse whose target came from the floor rather than the sharpened price could fire at around 4% — below the minimum we state. That is now closed.

## The discipline note

Three bets, three single points, and every one of them from the bottom tier. That is worth sitting with rather than glossing over.

Look at where today's margins are. Valiancy is 8.7 points clear and Talk Of New York 13.7 — the two widest figures we have produced all week — and both are no-bets on price, one of them now at *negative* expectation after being backed into 1.48\. Meanwhile the three horses we are actually backing are separated from their nearest rival by 1.6, 2.0 and 0.2 points respectively. In other words, every bet on this card is a thin opinion attached to a good price, and not one is a strong opinion at any price.

That is the correct output and it is also a warning. Yesterday our bottom tier went nought from two. Six bets is not a sample, but the whole premise of tiered staking is that thin margins win less often, and today the entire card sits there. Three points, one and a half percent of bank, is the appropriate answer to a day like this — and if all three lose, nothing has gone wrong.

The thing we are genuinely unsure about is narrower, and today puts it in front of us five separate times. Our staking only ever arms the top-rated horse. That means we walk past Kentucky River at 20, American Affair at 21, Saber Strike at 11, Pierian at 9.2 and Clash Of Hearts at 9.6 — overlays between 17% and 61% on our own numbers, several of them above their own target prices, all sitting immediately behind a top-rated we have declined. Either that is money left on the table or it is exactly the noise the rule exists to filter. Six weeks of logging them will answer it. Guessing will not.

Watch the markets in the final two minutes. The true price forms late, and we settle at Betfair SP as always.

Good luck.
