Glorious Goodwood begins with a superb eight-race card and, as ever at this unique venue, finding the best horse is only half the battle.

Goodwood’s sharp turns, downhill sections and changing gradients can expose anything lacking balance or tactical speed. The straight-course races bring their own complications, particularly when large fields split into groups.

The ground is officially **good, good to firm in places**, with watering taking place and a dry, sunny day forecast. Conditions should therefore be ideal for fast summer racing.

This is not a day to spray bets around. The opening handicap is fiendishly difficult, while the Goodwood Cup is a race to enjoy unless the market comes to us. Our strongest positions are **Al Hudaiba**, **Lake Forest at the right price**, and **Machadadorp** in the finale.

## 1:50 – Coral Chesterfield Cup Handicap

### A puzzle best approached with caution

The traditional festival opener has attracted 18 runners over just short of a mile and a quarter. It is exactly the type of Goodwood handicap in which traffic, position and luck can matter almost as much as raw ability.

There are credible cases to be made for several runners, but the horse who interests us most is **Quai De Bethune**.

Formerly trained by Andrew Balding, he signed off for that yard by winning the Golden Gates Handicap over this trip at Royal Ascot last summer. He was subsequently gelded and changed hands for 775,000 guineas before joining Hamad Al Jehani.

His first run for the new stable at Epsom was encouraging, and very little went right in the John Smith’s Cup at York. Wearing a hood for the first time, he was moving into the race from midfield when badly hampered inside the final two furlongs. His chance disappeared immediately.

It is impossible to know how much he had left, but that is partly the point: the York finishing position should not be taken literally.

Quai De Bethune remains lightly raced, stays the distance and acts on fast ground. James Doyle takes the ride, and prices around 8/1 and 9/1 were available early this morning.

There is enough there to suggest he could outrun those odds, particularly with bookmakers offering additional places. However, this remains an extremely difficult race in which to play with confidence.

**Verdict: No official bet. Quai De Bethune is the one for a very small each-way interest for anyone determined to get involved.**

## 2:25 – Coral Vintage Stakes

### Al Hudaiba may be quirky, but he is seriously talented

**Al Hudaiba** is our first strong selection of the meeting.

There is no hiding his quirks. He jinked and unseated his rider when seemingly in control on his second start, while he hung badly under pressure when winning the Group 2 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket.

Yet despite doing plenty wrong, he still found a way to beat Abraham Lincoln.

That performance said a great deal about his raw ability. Al Hudaiba looked awkward when asked to challenge in the dip, carried his head high and continued to hang, but still responded to his rider and led on the line.

He now wears blinkers for the first time. That is an obvious move designed to help him concentrate and race more professionally. The headgear is no guarantee, particularly around an unconventional track, but even a small improvement in his focus could unlock a much better performance.

His pedigree offers plenty of encouragement for seven furlongs. His dam won over the distance at two and is closely related to top-class performers Wuheida and Hibaayeb. He possesses both the ability and the scope to rate higher than he has so far.

Haffner is a major danger and may obtain a tactical advantage if allowed to control the pace. Al Hudaiba must also concede a 3 lb penalty to his rivals. Nevertheless, he brings the strongest established form into the contest.

The six-runner field is headed in the market by Al Hudaiba and Haffner, with Al Hudaiba trading at approximately 2/1 at the time of writing.

Our tissue price is **2.75**, so anything at that price or bigger represents a bet.

**Selection: Al Hudaiba**

**Minimum acceptable price: 2.75**

## 3:00 – HKJC World Pool Lennox Stakes

### Seven furlongs can bring out the best in Lake Forest

**Lake Forest** must take all the beating in the Lennox Stakes.

He has developed into a very smart performer and returned from a gelding operation with a Listed victory over seven furlongs at Haydock. He then dropped back to six furlongs for the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.

That Group 1 contest developed into more of a speed test than he ideally wants. Lake Forest was held up at the rear, began to make progress two furlongs out and produced his best work late, finishing fifth behind Almeraq.

The way he closed suggested that the return to seven furlongs would suit him perfectly.

Lake Forest has enough speed for six, but his finishing power is more potent when the race asks for stamina as well. Goodwood should provide that balance, particularly if the leaders go hard enough to stretch the field.

There are dangers. Qirat is three from three at Goodwood and returned to form at York last time. Witness Stand won this race last year, while Marvelman remains capable of further progress.

Lake Forest, however, is the horse with the strongest recent Group 1 performance. He was also second in this race 12 months ago, so there are no concerns about his ability to handle the track.

The one issue is price. Lake Forest was around **11/8** early this morning, shorter than our required entry point.

We are looking for **2.50**. At that price, he becomes a confident bet. Below it, we wait.

**Selection: Lake Forest**

**Minimum acceptable price: 2.50**

## 3:35 – Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes

### Scandinavia and Trawlerman renew their rivalry

This is a race to savour.

**Scandinavia** and **Trawlerman** produced one of the performances of Royal Ascot when fighting out the finish of the Gold Cup. Scandinavia eventually prevailed by a head after an extended duel, with the pair finishing nine lengths clear of the third.

Our ratings have them almost inseparable, with Scandinavia only one point ahead.

Scandinavia has made extraordinary progress since finishing fifth in the Queen’s Vase. He has now won six consecutive races, including last year’s Goodwood Cup and St Leger, and all three of his starts this season.

His victory at Ascot demonstrated more than stamina. He was forced to race against a hardened, top-class rival and had to dig deep throughout the closing stages. Four years younger than Trawlerman, Scandinavia has the potential to dominate the staying division for several seasons.

Trawlerman should not be underestimated.

He reportedly required protective eyewear in the preliminaries at Ascot because of a sensitivity to sunlight, and he was making his seasonal reappearance. Despite that, he ran right up to his best.

The drop from two and a half miles to two miles adds another layer to the rematch. Trawlerman possesses enough tactical pace to make the shorter distance work in his favour, and William Buick will probably attempt to dictate matters from the front.

Scandinavia was trading at approximately even money this morning, with Trawlerman around 2/1\. The market therefore separates them much more clearly than our ratings do.

Our prices are:

**Scandinavia: 2.90**

**Trawlerman: 3.20**

At current odds, neither qualifies as a bet. Trawlerman is the closer of the pair to becoming value, but there is no need to manufacture an interest in such a fascinating race.

**Verdict: No bet unless one of our tissue prices becomes available. Watch and enjoy.**

## 5:55 – World Pool Bet With The Tote EBF Fillies’ Handicap

### Machadadorp can repay the faith

We return to **Machadadorp**, hoping to recover the money she cost us at Newmarket earlier this month.

There was certainly no disgrace in that defeat.

Making her handicap debut over seven furlongs, she travelled powerfully close to the pace and moved into the lead two furlongs from home. She was then passed by Planet Seeker, who looked a long way ahead of her opening mark and produced a performance suggesting she could develop into a Pattern-class filly.

Machadadorp was comfortably the best of the remainder.

She had previously won a maiden at Chester and a novice at Wetherby, showing a useful combination of tactical speed and professionalism. Her Newmarket run confirmed that an official rating of 88 should be workable.

The key change is the drop to six furlongs.

Machadadorp travelled like a filly with enough speed for this trip at Newmarket, and a strongly run sprint may help her settle before allowing Oisin Murphy to deliver her challenge late. Unlike the races around Goodwood’s bends, this contest is staged on the straight course.

There are 21 runners, so luck and track position will still play a part. Machadadorp is drawn nine, which gives Murphy options if the field begins to divide.

The market has her trading at approximately **9/2**, which is slightly bigger than our tissue price of **5.20**.

She remains unexposed, her handicap debut form looks strong, and the drop in distance could prove an important positive.

**Selection: Machadadorp**

**Minimum acceptable price: 5.20**

# Day One Betting Plan

**1:50 – Quai De Bethune:** No official bet; optional very small each-way interest.

**2:25 – Al Hudaiba:** Strong win selection at 2.75 or bigger.

**3:00 – Lake Forest:** Confident selection, but only at 2.50 or bigger.

**3:35 – Goodwood Cup:** No bet unless Scandinavia reaches 2.90 or Trawlerman reaches 3.20.

**5:55 – Machadadorp:** Strong win selection at 5.20 or bigger.

Day one is about discipline rather than volume. Al Hudaiba and Machadadorp currently make the most appeal at the available prices, while Lake Forest becomes a bet only if the market drifts sufficiently.

The Goodwood Cup needs no financial interest to make it compelling. If Scandinavia and Trawlerman reproduce their Royal Ascot battle, the opening afternoon of Glorious Goodwood could deliver one of the races of the season.
