## Still smiling about the Sussex

We are allowed one paragraph of self-congratulation a year, and yesterday earned it.

Bow Echo carried our maximum stake in the Sussex Stakes and delivered — though he made us work for it. He took a keen hold, got shuffled and denied a clear run over two furlongs out, then drifted right, picked up the leaders inside the final furlong and got his head in front in the final strides. Billy Loughnane never panicked. In doing so Bow Echo became the first horse since Frankel to complete the 2000 Guineas, St James's Palace and Sussex treble, and one bookmaker was moved to describe day two at Goodwood as one of their worst at the track in years. We'll take that as a compliment.

Wild Blossom obliged as well, which turned a good day into a properly profitable one.

Now the tissue gets rebuilt from scratch, because it does not care what happened yesterday.

## How to read today's selections

Every price below comes from the ARA tissue. Two numbers do the work:

**Clear-by margin** — how far our top-rated is clear of the second horse on the composite rating. Above 5 points is our maximum-bet tier. Three to five is a standard bet. Below three is marginal, and below one the model is effectively telling us it cannot separate the principals.

**EV** — the available price against our fair price. Nothing gets backed below 5%.

Both gates have to open. A big edge on a horse that is only a point clear is not a bet, and a horse seven points clear at the wrong price is not a bet either. That distinction is the whole method, and today it produces a very uneven card: two maximum bets, one standard, two half-stakes, and three races where our own top-rated is a no-bet.

## 13:50 — Coral Kincsem Heritage Handicap (Class 2, 3yo, 1m2f, 14 runners)

**Top rated: Ciarrai Abu. Tissue 6.64, target 7.0, available 5.3\. NO BET.**

This one hurts, because Ciarrai Abu is genuinely our number one

Harry Eustace's gelding is a mile course-and-distance maiden winner here, shaped nicely when fourth on his handicap debut over the same trip at this track, then won at Ascot three weeks ago over a mile on good to firm — getting up late by the narrowest margin from Crest Of Fire, and doing it the hard way. He conceded first run, travelled fluently, took a while to find room, then hung badly left inside the last 100 yards while still going forward and led on the line. Five races in and he is winning ugly. The step up to 1¼m looks certain to suit, and the pedigree agrees, being a half-brother to the useful 9f–1¼m winner Alice Monet from a family that produced the Breeders' Cup Turf winner Red Rocks.

Two reasons we are not on, and the second is the one that settles it.

The price is wrong. We need 7.0 and we can get 5.3 — a market roughly a quarter shorter than our fair value. He is the Racing Post nap with nine tipsters on him, which is precisely why.

And the margin is thin. He is only **1.6 points clear** of Harmonics on the composite, which puts this race firmly in marginal territory before price is even considered. The setup does not help him either: he is a held-up type (one prominent run, four held up in his recent profile) in a race the model reads as offering him nothing, and he is drawn 2 with one of the weaker draw scores in the field.

Harmonics is the market's answer and the obvious danger — a Gosden colt rated 11lb higher under Shane Foley, and the one horse the model reads as genuinely well suited to today's conditions. We are not backing him at 5.8 either.

*One for the notebook:* the model does flag two overlays further down — **Strength Of Spirit** (fair 17.8, available 29) and **Loz Vegas** (fair 15.8, available 27), both around 60–70% of theoretical value with real money already traded. In a 14-runner Class 2 with a 1.6-point spread at the top, those are the mathematically defensible plays. We are not taking them, because a marginal race is a marginal race whichever end of the market you attack it from — but they are honest numbers and we would rather show them than hide them.

## 14:25 — Markel Richmond Stakes (Group 2, 6f, 10 runners)

**BET: Flann Sunna. Tissue 2.60, target 2.68, available 2.74\. Clear by 5.2 — maximum-bet tier.**

Our joint-strongest signal of the day, and the reason is not the price.

Flann Sunna is two from two for Simon and Ed Crisford, and both wins carried the same signature: he travels with real enthusiasm, then produces an instant turn of foot the moment he is asked. At Ascot last time he beat a subsequent winner comfortably on debut form and then went four and three-quarter lengths clear over six furlongs on firm ground under nothing more than hands and heels. That is not a horse getting the last drop squeezed out of him. The clock backed it up. He holds a Gimcrack entry, and York's speed-favouring nature will suit him later in the summer.

Here is the interesting part. On official ratings he is the *lowest* rated of the principals — Adaay Of Scarlett on 105, Cut A Dash 103, Night In Vegas 102, Hickory Lad 100, Flann Sunna 99\. The handicapper has not caught up with him. Our composite has him **5.2 points clear of Cut A Dash**, the widest margin in any Goodwood race today bar the Gordon, and Timeform reaches the same conclusion with 125 against 122\. Two independent ratings agree that the official figures are behind the horse.

The honest caveats, and there are three. The edge is thin: 2.74 against a fair price of 2.60 is +5.4%, which clears our 5% threshold by almost nothing. Any drift back towards 2.72 kills the flag entirely, so this needs taking rather than waiting on. He is drawn widest of the ten with the stalls in the centre, and Buick will have to make an early decision about which group to track.

**Take 2.68 or better and take it now. The stake reflects the 5.2-point margin, not the 5% edge.**

## 15:00 — Maison Perrier Gordon Stakes (Group 3, 3yo, 1m4f, 7 runners)

**BET: Enceladus. Tissue 3.03, target 3.15, available 3.20\. Clear by 7.5 — the strongest signal on the card.**

Joseph O'Brien's colt has gone from a Cork maiden win eight weeks before Royal Ascot to putting 10lb-plus of improvement on top of it in the King George V Handicap, relishing the step up in trip to edge a battling finish off a wide draw. He went on under two out, was tackled a furlong from home, edged towards the rail and simply kept finding. The runner-up franked the form at Ascot on Friday.

He is a well-made colt, a half-brother to the 1¾m winner Moab, out of a mare who won Grade 2 and Grade 3 events over a mile to 8.5f in the States and was placed three times at Grade 1 level. He will stay well beyond a mile and a half. There is no leap of faith in seeing a St Leger candidate here by autumn, at Doncaster or the Curragh.

The obvious objection is that on official ratings he is 8lb *behind* both Bay Of Brilliance and Geryon on 107\. So it is worth being precise about where we disagree with the handicapper: our ability rating has Enceladus on 129 against Bay Of Brilliance 122 and Geryon 119, and Timeform has him on 131 against 123 and 118\. Two independent ratings put him seven to eight points clear of a field the official figures say he is eight pounds below. He is also the only runner in the race the conditions model reads as well suited today, and he is unbeaten in two starts this season while the others carry questions.

That is not a small disagreement, and it is why the margin is 7.5 points — the widest on the card. When our numbers and the official ratings diverge this far, one of them is going to look silly by four o'clock. We are backing ours.

**Take 3.15 or better.**

*Notebook:* the model also flags **Sahara King** (fair 7.86, available 10.5, +34%) and **Venetian Lace** (fair 12.37, available 23, +86%) as overlays. Venetian Lace is the highest-rated horse in the race on official figures at 110 and drifting hard. Neither is armed — our staking layer only backs the top-rated — but if you like a saver in a seven-runner Group 3, that is where the value sits.

---

## 15:10 Nottingham — Supplicate (Class 4, 1m2f50y, 5 runners)

**BET: Supplicate. Tissue 2.09, target 2.16, available 2.58\. Clear by 6.1 — maximum-bet tier.**

The largest edge on the card, in the smallest field.

Roger Varian's filly has done nothing wrong. She confirmed the promise of her debut when landing the odds at Lingfield over a mile in December, then came back from six months off and followed up comfortably in a Bath novice over 1¼m in May — allowed to set a steady tempo, kicking on two out, in command inside the last, winning by two lengths without needing to improve on her Lingfield form. That is a filly doing exactly as much as she needed to, twice.

She is a sister to the useful mile-and-beyond winner Protest and to Implore, out of a mare from the family of the Commonwealth Cup winner Golden Horde. She stays 1¼m and remains capable of more.

The model likes almost everything about the setup. Her pace profile reads as a genuine leader, and in a five-runner race that is close to a licence to dictate — which is exactly how she won at Bath. She is the only runner the conditions layer marks as well suited today, and she is **6.1 points clear** of William Haggas's Crown Office on the composite, with our ability rating at 106 against his 100.

Now the market, and this is the whole story of the race.

Supplicate has **drifted from 2.0 overnight to 2.58**, a 29% move against her. Crown Office has gone the other way — **steamed in from 6.0 to 4.2**, the only genuine market mover in the field. The money is switching from our selection to the second horse, and it is doing it decisively.

We are taking Supplicate anyway, and here is the reasoning rather than the bravado. Our fair price is 2.09; even after a 29% drift she is a +23% overlay, the biggest on the card. Crown Office at 4.2 against our fair price of 5.35 is a *negative* 21%, so the steam has pushed him past fair value rather than towards it. The two moves are consistent with each other and inconsistent with our numbers, which means either the market knows something about Supplicate that we do not, or it is following a Haggas yard signal into a horse whose form figures — 251-046 — do not obviously support it.

The one thing genuinely on the market's side: she has been off for 69 days, and a well-fancied filly drifting nearly a third of her price is not nothing. If the drift continues past 2.7 in the last two minutes we will still be on, because that is above our floor. If she collapses back inside 2.16, we are not — the target is the target.

**Target 2.16\. Take anything above it. Monitor to the off.**

---

## 15:35 — Qatar Nassau Stakes (Group 1, 1m2f, 5 runners)

**NO BET on the top-rated. Clear by 0.1 — the model cannot separate this race.**

This is the most honest race on the card, in the sense that our own numbers admit defeat.

Our composite rating gives Diamond Necklace 122.91, Botagoz 122.78 and Friendly Soul 122.76\. On ability: 124, 124 and 124\. A tenth of a point covers the first two and a fortieth covers the first three. There is no top-rated here in any meaningful sense.

Diamond Necklace is unbeaten in five, has taken the French 1000 Guineas and the Prix de Diane this season, and the market has her around 1.87\. Our fair price is 2.50 and our target 3.90 — so on our figures she is roughly 30% over-bet, and the gap between market and model is the widest of any short-priced horse today. But a 0.1-point margin is not a foundation for a lay, and laying an unbeaten Ballydoyle Classic winner under Ryan Moore in a five-runner race on a model that cannot separate her from the second horse is exactly the sort of clever bet that costs money. Her ground question has also softened now the going has eased.

Which brings us to **Botagoz**, and to the most interesting number on the card. Our fair price is 6.09\. She is available at 17\. That is a +179% overlay on a filly the model rates exactly level with the favourite — three from four, supplemented at a cost of £40,000, a Group 3 winner over ten furlongs at Newcastle five weeks ago where she came from further back than Diamond Rain, met trouble over a furlong out and still edged ahead on the line. Varian took the same Hoppings-to-Nassau route with Al Husn in 2023 and says openly that he thinks she is a Group 1 filly.

We are not backing her, and we want to be straight about why, because the number says we should.

Her Newcastle win came on the all-weather in a slow time — her timefigure from that race is the weakest in this field by a distance — and the trouble-in-running that flattered the performance is much less likely to recur in a five-runner race run at a true tempo. More to the point, the same EV column that prices her at 6.09 also flags **Moments Of Joy as a strong positive-expectation bet at 220**. Moments Of Joy is a pacemaker. The model does not know that, because nothing in the data tells it. When a screen recommends the designated pacemaker, the correct response is to distrust that screen's output for the entire race rather than to cherry-pick the line you like from it.

**Verdict: a fascinating race but a poor betting race. If you want a small interest, Botagoz at 17 is the defensible one. Our own money stays in the pocket.**

---

## 16:10 — Buccellati Handicap (Class 3, 3yo 0-95, 5f, 18 runners)

**NO BET. Clear by 0.2.**

Another Goodwood impenetrable, and the model agrees. Eighteen sprinters over five furlongs, a handicapper who has done his job, and a top-rated only two-tenths of a point clear.

Pilu is our number one on a tissue of 11.77 with a target of 12.5, and he is available at 8.4\. The price is shorter than our fair value and the margin is inside noise. That is a double no.

The EV screen lights up like a fruit machine in this race — six runners flagged as strong positive expectation, headed by Kolkata Knight at 110 and One And Gone at 48 — and every one of them is a long shot with a few hundred pounds traded in an 18-runner sprint the model cannot rank. That is not value. That is a model being asked a question it has no business answering. Watch it, enjoy it, and move on.

---

## 16:45 — Whispering Angel Nursery Handicap (Class 2, 2yo, 7f, 18 runners)

**STANDARD BET: Mia Fantasia. Tissue 4.82, target 5.00, available 5.60\. Clear by 1.5 — marginal confidence.**

Oisin Murphy and Hugo Palmer, a real edge, and a deliberately reduced stake.

Mia Fantasia created an excellent impression winning an 11-runner maiden at Carlisle over seven furlongs last month, overcoming his greenness. He was then beaten six lengths into third at Ascot on firm ground — which reads badly until you look at what beat him. He was only behind two promising rivals and made his effort somewhat isolated from them, waited with, progress two out, unable to quicken approaching the final furlong.

And the winner of that Ascot race was **Dr Rascal, who franked the form emphatically by taking Tuesday's Coral Vintage Stakes**, a Group 2 on the opening day of this meeting, beating Haffner by half a length at 13/2 and putting the odds-on Al Hudaiba into third. That was no ordinary novice event.

He is a €40,000 yearling, fourth foal, half-brother to the mile winner Princess Mia out of a French 1½m winner. A mile will suit him eventually; a seven-furlong nursery off a mark of 79 is the sensible next step.

Two things keep the stake down. He is only **1.5 points clear** of Wise And Wonderful, which puts him in marginal territory. And the draw is against him — 13 of 18 with the stalls in the centre, a low draw score, and a pace map that reads as coming from the low and middle numbers. He is a held-up type, so Oisin will need to pick a channel and arrive late.

**Take 5.00 or better, at half our normal unit. +16% of edge on a 1.5-point margin earns a reduced stake, not a full one.**

*And the flag worth taking seriously:* **Wise And Wonderful** (Balding, Saffie Osborne, drawn 14) is our second-rated on ability at 103 against Mia Fantasia's 105 — and she is available at 9.0 against a fair price of 5.76, a +56% overlay, drifting from an evening 6.5\. On a strict expectation basis she is the better bet in the race. Our staking layer only arms the top-rated horse, which is a rule we are going to revisit, because 1.5 points of separation does not justify ignoring a 56% overlay on the horse immediately behind.

---

## 17:20 — Tatler EBF Maiden Fillies' (Class 2, 2yo, 7f)

Nothing. Short-priced Ballydoyle representative in So Lovely and not enough to price. We pass.

---

## 17:55 — HKJC World Pool Handicap (Class 3, 3yo 0-90, 1m, 20 runners)

**STANDARD BET: Exclusive Code. Tissue 5.50, target 5.70, available 6.80\. Clear by 4.1.**

We had written off the closing handicap. The model has other ideas, and on review it is right.

Archie Watson's gelding is **4.1 points clear** on the composite — the third-widest margin at the meeting today — with an ability rating of 108 in a race where nothing else reaches 107\. He is drawn 1, has the best conditions score in the field, and is one of only two runners the model reads as well suited today. James Doyle rides. He is available at 6.80 against a fair price of 5.50, a +24% overlay, and he has drifted from an evening 5.0.

The important caveat is liquidity. The 17:55 market has not properly formed yet — matched volume is a fraction of the earlier races — so that 6.80 is a provisional number that could move sharply in either direction once real money arrives. Our working assumption remains that the true market forms in the last two minutes, and that is when this one gets executed.

**Target 5.70\. Standard stake. Take it late.**

Go Rimbaud is the market's pick at around 9.2 and is our second-rated at 106, also flagged as a modest overlay. Twenty runners over a mile with a strong expected pace is a race where things go wrong, so we are sizing accordingly.

---

## 19:15 Epsom — Chantelle (1m113y)

**HALF STAKE: tissue 3.01, target 3.15, available 3.50\. Clear by 1.7 — marginal.**

An evening extra rather than a headline. Sir Mark Prescott's filly is our top-rated on ability at 100 in a four-runner race, and 3.50 against a fair price of 3.01 is +16%.

The reason it is a half stake and not more: she has been off for 152 days, we have no usable recent speed figure for her at all, and a 1.7-point margin in a four-horse race is barely a margin. Prescott has a long record of getting horses to win first time back after a long absence, which is the case for taking it; the absence of any current form line is the case against. Half a unit is the honest answer to that.

**Total exposure: 8 units across six bets.** Nothing fires below its target price, and nothing fires below floor at any point. Prices are Betfair exchange, taken this morning, and they will move.

## The discipline note

Look at where the stakes are and where the edges are, because they deliberately do not line up.

Flann Sunna carries a maximum bet on a 5% edge. Mia Fantasia carries a quarter of that stake on a 16% edge. That is not an error — it is the model doing what it is built to do. Stake follows the **clear-by margin**, because that is the number that has historically predicted whether we are right about a race. Edge only decides whether we play at all. A 5% overlay on a horse seven points clear of its field has been worth far more to us over three years than a 25% overlay on a horse we cannot separate from the second favourite. Today's card is an unusually clean illustration: the three maximum bets are the three widest margins on the day, and every race where the margin collapsed below one point is a no-bet regardless of how tempting the prices further down the market looked.

Two things we are watching in ourselves rather than in the market. The first is that our staking layer only ever arms the top-rated horse, and today it has therefore ignored a 56% overlay on Wise And Wonderful and a 179% overlay on Botagoz. Whether that rule is protecting us from noise or costing us money is a question for the weekend review, not for this afternoon.

The second is the ground. The model ran on good to firm and Goodwood is now Good and still watering. Every conditions-driven reading below is one notch optimistic about the pace of the surface until we re-run it.

Watch the markets in the final two minutes. The true price forms late, and we settle at Betfair SP as always.

Good luck.
