Nine races rated at Newmarket, Haydock and Worcester. **We are staking 6½ points across four bets, led by a maximum three points on Spirited Gesture in the Rockfel at 14:25.**

Newmarket is on good ground, good to firm in places, and Haydock is soft. Five of the nine races are at Class 1 level, including two Group 2s, and they are among the most interesting races of the autumn.

Our figures and our bets do not always agree, and today shows why. **Talk Of New York** is the clearest top rated on the card, 6.3lb ahead in the Joel Stakes, but at odds-on we will not back him. Our biggest bet, **Spirited Gesture**, is only second on our figure, because a filly with two runs has had little chance to show her full ability. A rating measures what a horse has already done. A bet is about what we think it will do today, and at what price.

A word on how the OOS rating is doing. Our top-rated horses are winning around twice their share of races, but the market is finding the same horses, so over the first few hundred runners the figures are close to break-even at Betfair prices. That is a small sample, and we will keep publishing the record as it grows.

## Betway British EBF Rosemary Stakes

Estissa tops our figures, but the likely lack of pace is a worry for a horse who comes from behind

**Estissa** is our top rated on **96.9**, **1.1lb** clear. She is a progressive filly who has run well in all three of her starts at this level, most recently when fourth at Longchamp earlier this month, finishing strongly. She is open to more improvement, and Oisin Murphy rides. Our worry is the race shape. She is usually held up to make a late run, and we expect this to be a steadily run race, so she may be asked to come from too far back.

**Alobayyah**, second on 95.8, is the hardest to weigh up. She beat 23 rivals in the Kensington Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, then disappointed in a Listed race at Haydock, where the modest gallop did not suit her. She is still open to improvement, but, as with Estissa, she may not get the strong pace she needs here.

**Arisaig** is another who races from behind. She has not won since the summer of 2024, but she was beaten only narrowly when third in a Listed race at Pontefract in July. She was never in the race at Ascot last time, but on her best form she is up to winning at this level.

**Gilding The Lily** tops our conditions column at 73.7 and has the strongest trainer and jockey combination in the race. She won a three-runner novice on the July Course at short odds, then followed up under a penalty at Kempton three weeks ago. She is progressive and must be considered, even with the rise in class.

Our ratings

| Horse | OOS | Cond | Trn | Jky |
| ---------------- | ---- | ---- | --- | --- |
| Estissa | 96.9 | 49.2 | 87 | 94 |
| Alobayyah | 95.8 | 57.0 | 95 | 77 |
| Arisaig | 95.6 | 51.9 | 76 | 65 |
| Blingy's Sister | 93.0 | 60.9 | 74 | 79 |
| Lizzana | 91.8 | 70.4 | 74 | 82 |
| Gilding The Lily | 91.1 | 73.7 | 93 | 100 |

The first four are covered by 3.9lb. Gilding The Lily and Lizzana are first and second on conditions but sit sixth and fifth overall.Verdict

**Estissa — selection, no bet.** We take her to get her head in front for Oisin Murphy, but the likely lack of pace is too big a question to back her.

**13:50 Newmarket No bet Group 3 Class 1 1m 4f Good 12 runners Fillies & mares**

## Princess Royal Stakes

A long season may have taken its toll on several of these, and there is no betting angle we trust

**Prizeland** is our top rated on **108.3**, **0.8lb** clear, for the in-form Andrew Balding yard. She recorded a career best on her first try on ground softer than good when winning the Galtres at York last month, then ran creditably to finish fourth in the Park Hill at Doncaster 15 days ago. She has claims, but her low draw means she will probably need to be brought through late.

**Inis Mor** is second on 107.5 and has the best form in the race. She won a Listed race at Goodwood in May and ran even better when placed in both the French and Irish Oaks. She was below par in the Yorkshire Oaks, but the soft ground there is a likely excuse. She is well drawn, and the front-runner **Venetia** should give her a lead into the race.

**Coedana** is a progressive filly who won a Listed race over this trip at Pontefract in June. She then ran well to finish sixth, beaten a little over two lengths, in a Group 1 at Munich at the end of July. She has been freshened up since, and the step back up in trip should suit her.

Our ratings

| Horse | OOS | Cond | Trn | Jky |
| ----------------- | ----- | ---- | --- | --- |
| Prizeland | 108.3 | 67.8 | 74 | 82 |
| Inis Mor | 107.5 | 49.9 | 57 | 93 |
| Coedana | 100.9 | 66.8 | 69 | 53 |
| Francophone | 100.2 | 61.0 | 54 | 84 |
| Frances Ethel | 100.1 | 46.2 | 92 | 63 |
| Without Prejudice | 100.0 | 62.7 | 90 | 94 |

The top two are 0.8lb apart and a clear 6.6lb ahead of Coedana in third. Summerson tops the conditions column at 71.7 but sits tenth overall.Verdict

**Inis Mor — selection, no bet.** Most of these have been on the go all season, and it is hard to know which are still at their peak. Prizeland was beaten as favourite only 15 days ago, Inis Mor needs to bounce back, and Coedana returns from a break. We cannot find a price we trust.

## CopyBet Arc Summer Chase Series Final Handicap Chase

A highly competitive final, and the top rated makes his seasonal return

**Loki’s Mischief** is our top rated on **117.3**, **1.5lb** clear. He was still a maiden over hurdles, but he has taken to fences, winning two handicaps at Ffos Las in May. He is an improving type, but this is his first run of the season, so his fitness has to be taken on trust.

**Merely A Detail**, second on 115.8, has no fitness questions. She never won over hurdles but won on her chasing debut over two miles here in July, then followed up by nine and a half lengths at Fontwell four weeks ago, eased down near the finish. An 8lb rise may not be enough to stop her, although this longer trip is untested.

Our ratings

| Horse | OOS | Cond | Trn | Jky |
| ----------------- | ----- | ---- | --- | --- |
| Loki's Mischief | 117.3 | 50.7 | 72 | 56 |
| Merely A Detail | 115.8 | 49.5 | 90 | 73 |
| Youdecide | 115.5 | 55.6 | 74 | 74 |
| Regal Renaissance | 115.0 | 56.6 | 88 | 89 |
| Country Park | 114.8 | 54.4 | 76 | 81 |
| Martin's Denuo | 114.7 | 55.2 | 63 | 59 |

Twelve runners, and the top eight are covered by 3.1lb. Pep Talking and She Is For Me Boys are first and second on conditions but ninth and eighth overall.Verdict

**Loki’s Mischief — selection, no bet.** A race to watch for future pointers rather than to bet in. We like Loki’s Mischief, but we would want the market to tell us he is fit first.

**14:25 Newmarket 3pt win Group 2 Class 1 7f Good 9 runners 2yo fillies**

## Betway Rockfel Stakes

Our figures favour Light Of Dawn, but Spirited Gesture is the bet of the day

**Light Of Dawn** is our top rated on **98.3**, **2.6lb** clear. She won on her debut at Carlisle, then improved to finish third in the Albany at Royal Ascot. She was third again in the Prix de Cabourg at Deauville before winning a Group 3 at Goodwood on her first try at seven furlongs. That Goodwood win came on good to soft ground, and she may find today’s quicker surface less to her liking.

**Spirited Gesture** is second on our figure on 95.7, but we think she is the best filly in the race. She won impressively on her debut on the July Course last month, then quickened clear at Newcastle at long odds-on. The runner-up there has improved since, which gives the form substance. She has had only two runs and has a great deal of improvement in her. Colin Keane takes over. At around **2.94** against our tissue of 2.15, she is our strongest bet of the day.

**Sugar Yes Please** tops our conditions column at 75.9\. She won readily at Newbury in July, then improved again to win the Sweet Solera on the July Course last month, arguably with more in hand than the margin suggests. She must be respected.

Our ratings

| Horse | OOS | Cond | Trn | Jky |
| ---------------- | ---- | ---- | --- | --- |
| Light Of Dawn | 98.3 | 73.7 | 82 | 89 |
| Spirited Gesture | 95.7 | 72.3 | 97 | 73 |
| Sugar Yes Please | 94.3 | 75.9 | 65 | 58 |
| Ruby Moon | 91.2 | 55.5 | 61 | 72 |
| Miss Miniver | 90.0 | 65.1 | 95 | 99 |
| Pensando A Te | 88.7 | 62.7 | 69 | 65 |

Nine runners covered by 17.4lb. Sugar Yes Please is top on conditions, Light Of Dawn second. Siena Storm is a non-runner.Verdict

**Spirited Gesture, 3 points win.** Our maximum stake. We expect her to take the step up in grade in her stride.

**15:00 Newmarket No bet Group 2 Class 1 1m Good 7 runners**

## Betway Joel Stakes

The clearest top rated on the card, and too short to back

**Talk Of New York** is our top rated on **116.6**, **6.3lb** clear, and he is first on ability, conditions and trainer and jockey. Wearing a hood, he won a conditions race here in April and followed up in a Listed race at Sandown. He then ran a fine third in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.

He was beaten half a length in a Group 3 at Glorious Goodwood last time. His connections put that down to the track, but we think William Buick produced him too late that day. Buick keeps the ride and will be keen to put the record straight.

**The Lost King** and **Persica**, who were separated by a nose at Haydock this month, are next on 110.3 and 110.0, and neither looks likely to trouble the top rated.

Our ratings

| Horse | OOS | Cond | Trn | Jky |
| ---------------- | ----- | ---- | --- | --- |
| Talk Of New York | 116.6 | 75.3 | 100 | 99 |
| The Lost King | 110.3 | 63.7 | 87 | 90 |
| Persica | 110.0 | 52.6 | 75 | 89 |
| Hankelow | 108.5 | 65.0 | 86 | 76 |
| Audience | 108.3 | 61.5 | 75 | 73 |
| Colori Forever | 106.4 | 56.6 | 77 | 78 |

Seven runners covered by 13.9lb. Talk Of New York is 6.3lb clear, the widest margin on today’s card, and also tops the conditions column at 75.3.Verdict

**Talk Of New York — selection, no bet.** We expect him to win this well, but we do not back odds-on shots, so we are happy to watch.

**15:35 Newmarket 1pt win Listed Class 1 1m 4f Good 4 runners**

## Betway Godolphin Stakes

The proven form horse against a pair of exciting but unexposed Godolphin colts

**Kokbastau** is our top rated on **107.4**, **5.0lb** clear. He is a progressive colt who won twice at this trip before completing a hat-trick with a smart performance over a mile and a quarter at Sandown in August. He steps up to Listed level, but on what has been shown so far he is clearly the best of these. Our tissue makes him **1.82**, so the current **2.68** looks good value.

**Fortitudine** is the main danger and the current favourite. He has won both of his starts over 11 furlongs at Kempton, the first by 21 lengths, a performance that will live long in the memory. He now switches to turf and steps up in grade and trip, and William Buick has chosen him from the two Godolphin runners, in the race that carries their name.

**Castlemont** is also unbeaten in two and tops our conditions column at 74.4\. He has plenty of potential, but Buick’s choice suggests he is the stable’s second string.

Our ratings

| Horse | OOS | Cond | Trn | Jky |
| ----------- | ----- | ---- | --- | --- |
| Kokbastau | 107.4 | 67.3 | 90 | 87 |
| Fortitudine | 102.4 | 62.4 | 100 | 96 |
| Castlemont | 100.0 | 74.4 | 100 | 90 |
| Archers Bay | 99.2 | 67.7 | 85 | 97 |

Four runners covered by 8.2lb. Kokbastau is 5.0lb clear. Castlemont tops the conditions column but sits third overall.

Verdict : **Kokbastau, 1 point win.** He is the best in the race on form, and he is improving too. Fortitudine is a really exciting prospect, but at the prices we side with Kokbastau to beat the Godolphin pair.

**16:18 Haydock ½pt win Handicap Class 3 7f Soft 11 runners**

## Christopher Ward Watchmaking Handicap

The tightest race on the card, and first-time cheekpieces could make the difference

**Mr Noble** is our top rated on **91.7**, but only **0.2lb** clear. He is a steadily progressive colt who won well at Southwell last month, then was caught late by two horses produced after him when third at York. Karl Burke fits cheekpieces for the first time, and they may bring a little more improvement.

**Spaceman** is second on 91.5\. He showed useful form when second on his debut at Redcar last winter and has won two of his four starts on the all-weather this season, most recently at Wolverhampton with more authority than the winning distance suggests. This is only his second run on turf, and there should be more to come.

**Storm Free** tops our conditions column at 72.5\. He is an improving four-year-old who won at Southwell in July, then battled well to follow up at this level at Sandown. He is 4lb higher now and has a wide draw to overcome, but he could complete a hat-trick.

**Ata Rangi** is versatile on ground and won over course and distance on his return in May. He was well beaten here last time, but he is now only 1lb above his winning mark, and his useful claimer is back in the saddle.

Our ratings

| Horse | OOS | Cond | Trn | Jky |
| -------------- | ---- | ---- | --- | --- |
| Mr Noble | 91.7 | 66.5 | 81 | 68 |
| Spaceman | 91.5 | 56.4 | 60 | 57 |
| Storm Free | 90.3 | 72.5 | 82 | 82 |
| Yorkshire | 90.3 | 58.0 | 85 | 83 |
| Aurora Majesty | 89.3 | 55.2 | 71 | 80 |
| Anyasi | 88.7 | 62.6 | 95 | 97 |

Eleven runners, and seven are covered by 3.0lb. Storm Free tops the conditions column, and Bobby Bennu’s figure is dragged down by one heavy defeat.

Verdict : **Mr Noble, ½ point win.** A really competitive handicap. The first-time cheekpieces can give him the small edge he needs to get home in front.

**16:45 Newmarket No bet Handicap Class 3 1m 1f Good 10 runners**

## Betway Bet 10 Get 40 Handicap

Wide open, and we prefer to watch

**Waterford Castle** is our top rated on **87.5**, **2.4lb** clear. He has been placed in four handicaps this season, running right up to his best in first-time blinkers when third at Glorious Goodwood. He did not need to improve to win a maiden six weeks ago and should be competitive back in a handicap.

**Go Rimbaud** has won twice on the all-weather this season and was beaten only narrowly on the July Course last month. He was a good second in a messy race at Kempton since, and the extra furlong should suit him.

**Runswick** is still on the upgrade on his all-the-way win at Carlisle. He was not seen at his best at Glorious Goodwood and was clearly not right on the July Course a week later, but he has had a break since. Ryan Moore is an eye-catching booking.

**Flying Frontier** won narrowly at Sandown last summer from a 7lb higher mark but has made little impact this season and was never involved at Doncaster last time. Blinkers are tried. **Mythical Bird** won at Salisbury in August and has run respectably twice since, but this is tougher.

Our ratings

| Horse | OOS | Cond | Trn | Jky |
| ---------------- | ---- | ---- | --- | --- |
| Waterford Castle | 87.5 | 69.0 | 83 | 93 |
| Go Rimbaud | 85.1 | 67.9 | 96 | 76 |
| Flying Frontier | 85.0 | 55.0 | 87 | 80 |
| Runswick | 84.6 | 46.0 | 69 | 96 |

| Silca Bay | 83.4 | 60.3 | 69 | 61 |

Ten runners covered by 8.2lb. Be The Standard tops the conditions column at 69.3 but is last overall after a long break.Verdict

**Runswick — selection, no bet.** A very competitive handicap, and we are happy to pass it as a betting race.

**16:50 Haydock 2pt win Handicap Class 3 1m 6f Soft 5 runners 3yo**

## By Eck Its Boddingtons Handicap

A clear top rated, stepping up in trip on his handicap debut

**Glory Of The Seas** is our clear top rated on **89.1**, **2.5lb** ahead of the rest, and has the strongest trainer and jockey combination in the race. His maiden form was useful, and he duly won at odds-on at Hamilton in June, showing plenty of stamina. A gelding operation also seems to have helped. He goes up in trip for his handicap debut, and he could be hard to stop.

**My Ballyquinn** won two of his first three handicaps, including over this trip at York in June. He was out of his depth in the Melrose, but he was back on track when third at Doncaster just over two weeks ago.

**Itica** improved markedly when stepped up to 11 furlongs to win a seller at Goodwood last month, and he is worth another chance after running below that level on his handicap debut at Doncaster, perhaps too soon afterwards. **Glory Road** won on his handicap debut at Newcastle in July and should do better than at York last time now he is back in calmer company.

Our ratings

| Horse | OOS | Cond | Trn | Jky |
| ----------------- | ---- | ---- | --- | --- |
| Glory Of The Seas | 89.1 | 70.1 | 98 | 88 |
| My Ballyquinn | 86.6 | 55.8 | 83 | 91 |
| Itica | 85.5 | 69.6 | 89 | 94 |
| Glory Road | 85.2 | 51.3 | 91 | 91 |
| Asia Force | 83.6 | 81.3 | 89 | 86 |

Five runners covered by 5.5lb. Asia Force tops the conditions column by a distance, at 81.3, but is last overall.Verdict

**Glory Of The Seas, 2 points win.** The step up in trip should bring out more improvement.

## The Staking Plan

| Race | Selection | Stake |
| --------------- | ----------------- | --------- |
| Newmarket 14:25 | Spirited Gesture | 3pt win |
| Newmarket 15:35 | Kokbastau | 1pt win |
| Haydock 16:18 | Mr Noble | ½pt win |
| Haydock 16:50 | Glory Of The Seas | 2pt win |
| Four bets | | 6½ points |

All four are win bets, and none is to be taken at odds-on. Glory Of The Seas and Kokbastau are clear top rated in their races, Mr Noble tops a very tight handicap, and Spirited Gesture is second on our figure to a filly we think she can beat.

### Selections without a stake

Newmarket 13:15 **Estissa**Newmarket 13:50 **Inis Mor**Worcester 14:05 **Loki’s Mischief**Newmarket 15:00 **Talk Of New York**Newmarket 16:45 **Runswick**

Talk Of New York is too short to back. In the other races the doubts are about the pace, whether horses are still in form, or whether the race is simply too competitive.

### About the OOS rating

The figures in the tables are our own. **OOS** blends a horse’s ability, how well today’s conditions suit it, and the strength of its yard and rider into a single number, set on the official-rating scale of the race it runs in. **Cond** scores ground, trip, class, draw and likely pace shape from the horse’s own record under each. **Trn** and **Jky** are current form figures for the trainer and jockey.

The strip above each table shows that race’s whole field, from its lowest OOS figure to its highest, with every runner marked. The green tick is the top rated, and gold marks a horse we have staked. Every figure is read against the rest of its own field, never across races: a 116 in the Joel Stakes and an 87 in the handicap are not comparable numbers.

### The usual caveat

This is opinion and analysis, not advice. Stake only what you can comfortably afford to lose, and never chase a losing day.
