Monday 3 August 2026 — Ripon

**The look back -** Saligo Bay was our selection yesterday and finished eighth of the field at 10.1\. The race went to Tiger at 3.3, and there was never a moment where our horse looked like being involved.

---

## First, the ground

Ripon is officially **Good** and the model ran on Good for both races. No watering or rail movement has been reported that would change the picture, and no meeting-day update had landed at the time the ratings were locked — so if the going is eased or quickened before the off, treat both conditions ratings as provisional.

Direction of travel matters more than the label. In the opener, **Dark Cloud Rising** carries the strongest good-ground profile in the field (68.7 ground score) and would be hurt by a genuine drying-out; **Lord Roxby** (76.4) would benefit. In the second, **Everyoneknowsadave** (66.9) is the one whose rating is most exposed to a change either way.

---

## How to read today's selections

Four numbers do the work. Everything else is commentary.

**ARA fair price** — what the model thinks the horse is worth, before looking at the market. Built from ability rating, then adjusted for ground, distance, class, pace and draw, then blended 50/50 with the market's own opinion.

**Exchange price** — the best price actually available to back right now on the exchange. Bookmaker prices are ignored entirely. If the exchange isn't offering it, it doesn't exist.

**Clear-by margin** — how far the top-rated horse is clear of the second-best on the conditions-adjusted composite. This is the confidence gate. Under 2.0 is a **no bet**, logged as a pass; 2.0–3.0 is 1 point; 3.0–5.0 is 2 points; 5.0 and above is 3 points. One point is 0.5% of bank.

**Target price** — fair price plus a demanded margin. We bet at the target or we don't bet. Taking a shorter price because the horse looks nice is how a rated operation turns into a punting operation.

A selection that fails on price is not a tip that got away. It is the system working.

## 15:54 Ripon — Class 3 Handicap, 6f, 7 runners

The model's top-rated is **Dark Cloud Rising**, clear by 2.5 on the composite — a one-point race by the ladder. He is well treated on the pick of his form, won over course and distance in June, and was placed at Pontefract 27 days ago having missed the break slightly.

Here is the problem.

| Horse | ARA rank | ARA fair | Exchange | Value |
| --------------------- | -------- | -------- | -------- | ---------- |
| **Dark Cloud Rising** | **1** | **3.33** | **2.98** | **−10.5%** |
| Commanche Falls | 2 | 6.13 | 6.60 | +7.7% |
| Grant Wood | 3 | 10.14 | 10.00 | −1.4% |
| Lord Roxby | 4 | 6.35 | 5.90 | −7.1% |
| Rousing Encore | 5 | 8.05 | 7.40 | −8.1% |
| Saint Lawrence | 6 | 9.67 | 12.00 | +24.1% |
| Boston Dan | 7 | 18.97 | 18.00 | −5.1% |

We want 3.45 and the market is offering 2.98\. That is not a close call — it is a tenth of a pound of value gone in the wrong direction, and the money has been arriving for him, not leaving. Once the field's prices are normalised to a fair book, Dark Cloud Rising has come in from an implied 3.46 overnight to 3.07 now. He is being backed. A price of 3.45 is not coming.

**Verdict: no bet.** Right horse, wrong price. The order sits at 3.45 and almost certainly expires unfilled.

Two footnotes worth having. First, the biggest real market move in the race belongs to **Grant Wood**, in from an implied 15.1 to 10.3 on a normalised basis — our model rates the horse third. Second, **Lord Roxby** and **Rousing Encore**, are the two the early money is walking away from. Both are ranked fourth and fifth here and both trade below their fair price. That is a race where the public form line and the market have parted company, and we are not being paid to guess which one is right.

## 16:24 Ripon — Class 4 Handicap, 1m1f170y, 5 runners

**Everyoneknowsadave** is just top-rated but is a no-bet selection.

The clear-by margin is **1.8**, and under the minimum-confidence rule adopted at the start of this week, anything below 2.0 is a pass — logged, not bet. The rule exists because a thin rating gap in a five-runner handicap is not a rating gap at all; it is noise dressed up as an opinion. His profile is genuinely improving — a career-best when winning at Nottingham 16 days ago, overcoming a pace bias in a slowly-run race — but he is 6lb higher and has never won off a mark above 70\. The model likes him by less than two points. That isn't enough.

He has also drifted, from an implied 3.32 overnight to 3.93\. Given yesterday, that alone would give us pause.

**Verdict: no bet.** Fails the confidence gate.

One horse in the race carries an enormous value flag — **His Finest Hour** at 11.0 against a fair price of 6.27, an expected value north of 70%. Ignore it. He has not run for 284 days, and the model's freshness input is informational only: it does not penalise a layoff. The market has priced ten months off the track and the model hasn't. That is a blind spot in our numbers, not an edge in the market, and the honest thing is to say so rather than dress it up as a value bet.

## The card at a glance

| Time | Course | Top-rated | Clear-by | Fair | Exchange | Call |
| ----- | ------ | ------------------ | -------- | ---- | -------- | -------------------------- |
| 15:54 | Ripon | Dark Cloud Rising | 2.5 | 3.33 | 2.98 | **Pass — price** |
| 16:24 | Ripon | Everyoneknowsadave | 1.8 | 3.57 | 3.90 | **Pass — confidence gate** |

**Bets today: none. Passes logged: two.**

## The bottom line

Two races, two passes, and no stake struck. There will be readers who find that a poor return on opening the page, and it is worth being straight about why it happens anyway.

Yesterday we backed a horse that was drifting because we had decided in advance that it was our bet. Today the model produces one horse it likes at a price we can't get and one it doesn't like enough to back at any price — and the answer both times is to do nothing. A day with no bet in it costs nothing. The habit of finding one anyway is what actually empties the account.

Back tomorrow, whatever the card looks like.
