## The look back

Fenlander was our one-point selection yesterday and finished fifth at 5.6\. He raced prominently and led the main group into the final furlong, which is close to the shape we wanted, but he emptied inside the last hundred yards and the race was gone.

The winner was Fifty Nifty at 25.34, who came from out of the clouds. That is worth sitting with for a second: the race was won by a horse nobody's numbers had anywhere, off a hold-up ride, in a race where the pace collapsed. There is no lesson in that for the model and we are not going to invent one. Some races are simply not ours.

That leaves us four points down on the week — two per cent of bank.

Now the tissue gets rebuilt from scratch, because it does not care what happened yesterday.

---

## First, the ground

**Newmarket** and **Ascot** are Good to Firm; **Haydock** is Good; **Redcar** is Good to Firm. The model ran on those inputs for every race on the card and nothing has moved since the ratings were locked.

The more important market note today is Ascot. Three of the twelve races we cover are Shergar Cup contests, and that changes the character of the prices rather than the form. The jockey pool is full of overseas riders and less familiar names, and the market broadly declines to price them at all — it prices the horse and shrugs at the silks. The practical consequence is a book that moves further and faster than a normal Saturday handicap, in both directions, and prices that can look wrong for hours before correcting.

That cuts two ways for a rating-led operation, and it is worth being straight about which way. A model that rates horses and largely ignores jockeys should, in theory, have *more* edge in a race where the market is mispricing riders. But a volatile market is also a market that has not settled on an answer, so the price you see now is a weaker piece of evidence than usual. We are taking the first half of that seriously and discounting the second: on Shergar Cup races today the model's opinion carries more weight than the market's, but the variance around the result is higher than the numbers suggest.

---

## How to read today's selections

Four numbers, and one distinction that matters more than any of them.

**ARA fair price** — what the model thinks the horse is worth on its own evidence, built from ability rating and then adjusted for ground, distance, class, pace and draw, before being blended with the market's own view.

**Exchange price** — the best price available to back on the exchange right now. Bookmaker prices are ignored entirely.

**Clear-by margin** — how far the top-rated horse is clear of the second-best on the conditions-adjusted composite. This is the confidence gate and it sets the stake. Under 2.0 is a **pass**, logged and published; 2.0–3.0 is 1 point; 3.0–5.0 is 2 points; 5.0 and above is 3 points. One point is half a per cent of bank.

**Drift** — how far the price has moved since the evening, measured properly. Raw overnight-to-now comparisons overstate drift badly, because an overnight book carries a 10–25% margin that simply evaporates when the exchange market forms. Every drift figure quoted below is normalised so both books sum to 100%, which is the only version that means anything.

And the distinction: a **selection** is the horse the model rates best in a race. A **bet** is a selection we can also get at a price worth taking. They are not the same thing and today they come apart three times.

## The bets

### 15:00 Haydock — Class 1, 7f 212y

**FALLEN ANGEL — 3 points. Fair price 1.88, available 2.06.**

This is the widest confidence margin we have produced in weeks. Fallen Angel is **10.1 clear** on the composite, which is not a rating edge so much as a different weight class — she is a triple Group 1 winner dropping back to a trip she is proven over, in a race where the second-best horse on our numbers is more than ten points behind her.

The obvious counter is her return: she was beaten a long way last of four at York over ten furlongs, was easy to back beforehand, and failed to make anything of an uncontested lead. That is a genuine warning and we are not dismissing it. But the shape of it argues for today rather than against — she is a front-running mare who was asked to make all over a trip beyond her best after seven months off, and she is now back inside a mile with a pace score that says she will get to dictate again on her own terms.

The market has her at 2.06 against our 1.88, and the price has been essentially static since the evening once the overnight margin is stripped out — a real move of about seven per cent, which is noise. Twenty thousand pounds matched and a formed market. We are being paid a small premium to back the horse we rate hardest on the card.

**Take 2.06 or better. Do not chase below 1.94.**

### 15:20 Ascot — Class 2, 6f (Shergar Cup Sprint)

**THUNDER CALL — 3 points. Fair price 2.48, available 2.88.**

Second-widest margin on the card at **6.3 clear**, and the price is genuinely in our favour: 2.88 against a fair price of 2.48, which is a sixteen per cent edge with the market formed and £6,600 matched. The normalised move since the evening is four per cent. This price is stable, not drifting into our hands because something is wrong.

The form case is straightforward. He won a maiden by a wide margin on his return, followed up on handicap debut in a twenty-two-runner race at York, and then ran at least as well in defeat at Newmarket last time despite the emphasis being on raw speed over a trip short of his best. He is open to more, and a stiffer six furlongs here should suit better than a sharp one did.

The caveat is the one from the ground section: this is a Shergar Cup race, the market is unreliable, and the rider is one the market is not pricing. We think that is where our edge is rather than where our risk is — but it is both, and the honest framing is that this is our most confident *rating* of the day sitting in the least reliable *market* of the day.

**Take 2.88 or better.**

### 16:14 Newmarket — Class 3, 1m

**DRYMEE — 2 points, on market formation. Fair price 3.30, available 4.4.**

**4.0 clear**, and the biggest raw price edge among the qualifiers — 4.4 against a fair price of 3.30\. He is improving with every start, has already proved himself effective on heavy and on firm, and won his handicap debut with something in hand. A hat-trick is a live proposition off this mark.

Two honest qualifications. The price looks like it has drifted heavily from the overnight, but normalised it is a move of about sixteen per cent — moderate, not alarming, and mostly an artefact of the overnight margin. More importantly, the market here has not formed: barely £1,400 matched with the race the best part of seven hours away. That is not a price you can trust yet.

So this is armed rather than struck. **The order sits and waits for the market to form.** If the edge is still there when there is real money in the book, we take it. If the price collapses into the tissue, we don't.

## Selections we are not backing

### 14:25 Haydock — Class 1, 1m 2f 42y

**SALLAAL** is our top-rated at **4.2 clear**, and by the ladder that is a two-point race. He is unbeaten in two this season, stormed clear at Epsom in June and then won a listed race at Sandown with a bit in hand, and he should be up to winning at pattern level before long.

He is also 1.76, and our fair price is 1.91\. We do not back odds-on, and even if we did, the number is negative. He is published as a selection with the tissue attached so you can make your own judgement — but there is no bet here for us.

Worth noting for anyone reading the race rather than the tissue: **Convergent** is the horse the money has come for, in from a normalised 6.59 to 4.94, and he sits at 4.9 against our 4.54\. **Nahraan** has gone the other way — a genuine drift of nearly forty per cent once the books are normalised — and we would want no part of that despite the model showing him a positive number.

### 15:40 Newmarket — Class 2, 7f

**CASTLE ROCK** is **4.6 clear**, another two-point race on confidence, and the profile is attractive: unbeaten in two as a juvenile with the form of both wins working out, and an opening mark that may well underestimate him.

The price kills it. He is 2.44 against a fair price of 2.77, and he has shortened seven per cent on a normalised basis since the evening — the money is arriving, not leaving. Our target is 3.10 and it is not coming. **No bet.**

## The seven we're passing

Every one of these fails the confidence gate. The margin is the number in brackets.

| Time | Course | Top-rated | Clear-by | Why we're out |
| ----- | --------- | ----------------- | -------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| 13:55 | Newmarket | Nuit d'Eclair | 0.4 | Effectively a coin-flip with Graceful Song; both trade under their tissue |
| 14:30 | Newmarket | Sanbona Warrior | 1.8 | Below the gate, and 3.55 against a fair 3.93 |
| 14:45 | Ascot | Stem | 1.5 | Below the gate despite a +22% price edge — the rule is the rule |
| 15:34 | Haydock | Crimson Spirit | 1.5 | Below the gate, and no price advantage to argue about |
| 15:47 | Redcar | Democracy Dilemma | 0.2 | The narrowest margin on the card; 2.32 against a fair 2.94 |
| 15:55 | Ascot | Hoseki | 1.7 | Below the gate; progressive filly but 3.05 is short of our 3.25 |
| 16:40 | Haydock | Lost Signal | 0.4 | Below the gate, and 3.60 against a fair 6.66 is the worst price on the card |

The 14:45 deserves a word, because it is the one that will look wrong if it wins. Stem is available at 8.6 against a fair price of 7.07 — a real edge, on a horse the model likes best in the race. He is also only 1.5 clear of the second-best, which under our rules is not an opinion, it is a preference. We adopted the minimum-confidence floor precisely so that a tempting price could not talk us into a race we do not actually have a view on. Today it costs us a possible winner. That is what the rule is for.

## The bottom line

Two of today's margins — 10.1 and 6.3 — are the widest we have published in a month, and it would be easy to write that up as the model finding its range at exactly the right moment. It isn't. The card threw up two races with unusually clear top-rateds and that is the entire explanation. Had the same twelve races run last Tuesday the stakes would have been identical.

That is the point of running a ladder rather than a feeling. The stake comes from the margin and the margin comes from the numbers, and neither of them knows or cares that the week is in the red. Today happens to be a bigger day than most. Next week's version of today might be two passes and nothing else, and it will get written up the same way.

Back tomorrow, whatever the card looks like.
