It is an interesting day rather than a particularly busy one, with **two horses making the betting list** and another who tops our ratings but comes with enough reservations for us to leave him alone.

The action centres on Carlisle before we head north to Hamilton this evening, where we think there may be a little more to come from a horse whose recent form figures don't necessarily tell the whole story.

## 3.45 Carlisle – INFLUENCER MAN

**2 Points WIN**
**Tissue Price: 3.7**

Influencer Man makes his nursery debut from an opening mark of **75**, and we think there is every possibility that underestimates him.

He is certainly bred to be a sprinter. He is a half-brother to several winners, including juvenile 5f winner **Aussie Stormer**, by Mehmas, and 6f winner **Rage Of Thunder**, while his dam was herself a winner over both 5f and 6f as a two-year-old. There is speed throughout the pedigree and what we have seen on the racecourse so far backs that up.

His latest run at Ripon, when finishing second behind **Quillan**, was particularly encouraging. He was held up before having to make his challenge widest of all and stayed on strongly enough to take second late in the race. There was still a degree of greenness about him and it looked very much like the performance of a horse capable of progressing when gaining more experience.

That view is supported by the wider form analysis. Sporting Life describes him as having made a promising start and specifically identifies the **stiffer Carlisle track as a potential positive**, while Racing TV also makes him its selection for the race and expects further improvement on his handicap debut. citeturn867589view5turn867589view4

This is a **Class 5 nursery over five furlongs**, and an opening mark of 75 does not look excessive to us. citeturn867589view5

There are dangers, as you would expect in a nursery. **Concert Pitch** arrives after another solid effort at Beverley and has plenty of experience, while Onslaught is another making his handicap debut after showing ability in maidens. citeturn867589view5

But Influencer Man is the one we believe has the greatest potential to step forward.

If he handles the different demands of Carlisle and progresses as expected from that Ripon run, we think he can prove better than his opening mark.

## 4.15 Carlisle – GREAT

**NO BET**

Great comes out **top rated on our figures**, and it would be no surprise whatsoever to see him win again.

He overcame the way the race developed when winning over this course and distance last month and, after not being seen to best effect on his next couple of appearances, returned to winning ways in good style at Pontefract just six days ago.

He runs here under a penalty, but on the bare form he remains a major player. Sporting Life also makes Great its first choice, noting how well he did to reel in the leaders at Pontefract. citeturn245628search0

So why aren't we backing him?

Quite simply, we don't like the set-up enough.

Our main concern is the **wide draw**, particularly when combined with his tendency to be a little slowly away. In a six-furlong race that creates the possibility of having to surrender valuable ground early and then rely on the race developing perfectly in front of him.

He may well get that scenario.

But he may not.

There is a significant difference between identifying the horse we believe is most likely to win and identifying a worthwhile bet. Great is top rated, but at the anticipated price we don't think there is enough margin for the things that could go wrong.

Sometimes the correct bet is no bet.

**Top Rated: GREAT**
**Verdict: NO BET**

## 7.00 Hamilton – STRENGTH OF SPIRIT

**1 Point WIN**
**Tissue Price: 9.0**

Our second bet comes in the competitive **Kinrara Distillery Scottish Trophy Handicap**, a Class 3 contest over nine furlongs. citeturn188774view0

We like the look of **Strength Of Spirit**.

His recent form figures don't immediately leap off the page, but we think they disguise a horse who has run considerably better than the bare results suggest.

Two runs in particular interest us.

At **Musselburgh**, he found himself squeezed up against the rail and never really got the opportunity to show what he could do.

Then came **Goodwood**, where again things didn't fall his way. He was stepping up to ten furlongs, didn't completely settle and, once his chance had effectively gone, wasn't subjected to an unnecessarily hard race.

The return to around **nine furlongs today looks much more suitable**.

Sporting Life's assessment also makes the point that his Goodwood effort can be viewed more positively than the finishing position suggests and describes him as one worth considering. He returns here from an official mark of **85**, with **Jack Nicholls taking a valuable 3lb off his back**. citeturn188774view0

This certainly isn't an easy race. Return To Unit, Spoken Truth, Dwindling Funds and several others bring legitimate claims, which is reflected in our staking.

But at the right price we are prepared to take the chance that Strength Of Spirit has more to offer.

His last couple of runs contain enough hidden promise for us to believe he is coming here in better form than the form figures indicate, and today's combination of trip and jockey claim gives him an opportunity to show it.

At our tissue price of **9.0**, he makes the staking plan.

**Selection: STRENGTH OF SPIRIT – 1 Point WIN**
**Our Tissue: 9.0**

# Today's Betting

**3.45 Carlisle – INFLUENCER MAN**
**2 Points WIN – Tissue 3.7**

**4.15 Carlisle – GREAT**
**NO BET**

**7.00 Hamilton – STRENGTH OF SPIRIT**
**1 Point WIN – Tissue 9.0**

### Total Staked: 3 Points

It's a day where patience remains important. We have a strong view on Influencer Man's potential to improve from his opening handicap mark and a more speculative value angle with Strength Of Spirit later in the evening.

Great could easily win the 4.15, but betting isn't simply about finding winners. **Price, circumstances and risk all matter**, and today he is one we are happy to watch rather than chase.

Good luck if you're playing.
