First of all sincerest apologies for the late arrival of the article - we have been switching to a brand new server which hopefully give us more processing power, however it did not go as smoothly as planned. Sorry.

No bets again yesterday so nothing to report.

## First, the ground

Good to firm at all four turf meetings, with Brighton described as good in places and Sandown carrying the same qualification on the sprint course only. Southwell is standard on the Fibresand.

No watering announcements and no rail movements to report, so every model input ran on confirmed ground rather than an overnight assumption.

The Sandown note is worth holding on to. Good in places on the sprint course but not on the round course means the five-furlong chute and the mile-plus races are, in practice, being run on slightly different ground. Neither of today's Sandown selections is a sprinter, so the model treated both as running on the round course reading.

## How to read today's selections

The rating is only half of it. A horse can be clearly the best in the race and still be a terrible bet, and most days the second half of that sentence does more work than the first.

**The ability rating** is a composite built from official marks, speed figures, trainer and jockey records, and course-and-distance evidence. It answers one question: how good is this horse, expressed in pounds.

**The clear-by margin** is the gap between the top-rated runner and the second. It is the number that decides whether anything gets backed at all, and it drives the stake:

- Under 2.0 — **no bet**, logged as a pass
- 2.0 to 3.0 — 1 point
- 3.0 to 5.0 — 2 points
- 5.0 and above — 3 points
- Maximum bet — 5 points, and only when six separate conditions hold at once

One point is half a percent of bank. The maximum tier requires a clear-by of at least 6, an expected value above 20%, a target price of 2.10 or better, a formed market, matched volume of at least forty times the intended stake, and the race inside sixty minutes of the off. It is designed so it can never trigger at breakfast.

**The price test comes last.** Every bet below is provisional on it. A qualifying rating with no value at the price is a pass, and today's prices had not formed when this was written — the ladder positions are set, the final decision on both is made against the exchange inside the last hour.

**Everything settles at Betfair SP.** Bookmaker prices are not used and are not relevant to the record.

## The races

### 4:25 Brighton — Challenge Cup Handicap, 1m4f, 0-80

**SARANGPUR — 1 point**

Clear-by 2.6, which puts this on the bottom rung of the ladder rather than anywhere near a strong bet.

He arrives off a Newbury win over the same trip on the same ground, beating Nowshesdancing by half a length. The shape of that race is the part that interests the model: he was ridden with patience, only came under serious pressure inside the final furlong, and had established control by the line. That is a horse winning comfortably within himself over twelve furlongs.

He handles polytrack, soft and good to firm — a range that suggests the ground is not a limiting factor here — and he stays the mile and a half without question.

The reservation is the handicapper. He wins a Class 5 off 74 and reappears eleven days later in a Class 4 at Brighton, so the assessment has not yet caught up with the improvement, but it will. That timing is why the model has him at all.

**The argument against:** Brighton is not Newbury. It is a tight, undulating, left-handed track that punishes a horse who wants time to build momentum, and the patient tactics that suited him last time are harder to execute here. Just a small investment.

### 6:48 Sandown — Hwfa Williams Handicap, 1m2f, 0-90

**INTERSTATE — 2 points**

Clear-by 3.0\. Today's strongest hand on the ratings, and the only race where the composite, Timeform and the market are broadly pointing the same way.

A three-year-old making his handicap debut, and that is the entire case. He ran twice as a juvenile without troubling anyone, then returned after an eight-month absence and was beaten a neck in a small-field Doncaster novice over ten furlongs. The interesting detail is how he was beaten: he was second best through the middle of the race, could not go with the winner when it quickened, and then found something again in the last furlong and was closing hard at the line. That pattern says the trip was the making of him and that he had not finished improving.

Cheekpieces were fitted for that comeback and are retained. He cost 220,000 as a yearling out of a family that has produced winners at up to a mile and a quarter, and the pedigree suggests further improvement is the expectation rather than the hope.

**The argument against:** the handicapper has had one Doncaster novice to work from, and an 81 mark for a horse who has never won a race is not obviously generous. Three-year-olds making handicap debuts after long absences are a group the market prices efficiently, and if he goes off short there is no bet here regardless of the rating. This is the one to watch the exchange on.

### 4:33 Newmarket — Eastern Counties Handicap, 2m, 0-85 — **NO BET**

High Fibre is top-rated on the composite and it is not close enough. Clear-by 1.9, which is inside the threshold, and the pass is automatic.

That is frustrating, because the horse has a genuine story. He returned to the Flat for a new yard, then went to Market Rasen and won a Class 2 handicap hurdle by nearly three lengths having made mistakes at the fourth-last and third-last and still gone through the field from the home turn. He has had a breathing operation, he will stay beyond a mile and a half, and there is a fair argument he is still ahead of his mark on the level.

But 1.9 is 1.9\. Percy Shelley and Minhad are close enough on the numbers that a small error anywhere in the composite reorders the race, and the whole point of a threshold is that it applies on the days you would rather it did not.

---

### 7:23 Sandown — BetMGM Handicap, 7f, 0-85 — **NO BET**

Ascending Star tops the ratings and the clear-by is 1.0.

He was third of ten here last month on his handicap debut, sent off favourite, and the reason he did not win is instructive rather than damning: he was allowed to stride on in front, was taken on before the final furlong, and had nothing in reserve when it mattered. Front-running at Sandown over a mile with a stiff finish is a demanding way to be ridden, and the drop back to seven furlongs is an obvious response.

None of that gets him past the threshold. Desert Shadow rates within a length and a half of him and has a better draw of the two on the model's course-and-distance evidence. A one-point gap is noise, not an edge.

---

### 7:05 Chepstow — Handicap, 1m, 0-85 — **NO BET**

Clear-by 0.6, and three horses are rated within a pound of each other. There is nothing to bet here.

Windbreaker is the least exposed runner in the race, cost 375,000 as a yearling, and went close over nine and a half furlongs at Wolverhampton in late June. He is also the definition of expensive to follow — beaten at 3/1 or shorter on each of his last five starts, and disappointing on turf last time when racing too freely in first-time cheekpieces. The headgear stays on and the trip comes back, both of which are logical responses.

Logical responses to a losing sequence are not a betting proposition when the model cannot separate the first three in the market.

---

### 6:30 Chepstow — Centenary Celebration Handicap, 5f, 0-80 — **NO BET**

Clear-by 0.2\. The tightest race on the card and the easiest pass of the day.

Solar Edge is joint top-rated with Rogue Bullet and the model cannot split them. He was seventh of nine at Lingfield last time, but was caught wide throughout, which makes the bare form misleading — his Windsor run before that, when he went close in the same grade, is the truer guide, and he is unbeaten in two handicaps over course and distance.

All of which would be a case if there were a gap. There is not.

## Today's card at a glance

| Time | Course | Horse | Clear-by | Position |
| ---- | --------- | -------------- | -------- | ------------ |
| 4:25 | Brighton | Sarangpur | 2.6 | **1 point** |
| 4:33 | Newmarket | High Fibre | 1.9 | Pass |
| 6:30 | Chepstow | Solar Edge | 0.2 | Pass |
| 6:48 | Sandown | Interstate | 3.0 | **2 points** |
| 7:05 | Chepstow | Windbreaker | 0.6 | Pass |
| 7:23 | Sandown | Ascending Star | 1.0 | Pass |

Two bets, four passes. Both bets remain provisional on the price test inside the final hour.

## The discipline note

Four of today's six best horses are not being backed, and three of those four have a perfectly good story attached. High Fibre is improving and probably ahead of his mark. Ascending Star has an obvious excuse and an obvious solution. Solar Edge was caught wide and is better than his last run reads.

Every one of those is true, and none of it is worth a penny, because in each case there is another horse close enough that the rating cannot be trusted to have picked the right one.

That is the whole method. The rating tells you which horse is best. The clear-by tells you whether the rating is confident enough to act on. A tipping service publishes the first number. A record is built on the second.
