Racing Preview – 18/09/26

Twenty-one races rated across four meetings — soft ground at Ayr for Gold Cup Friday, good at Newbury, the last of the summer jumps at Newton Abbot and three under lights at Wolverhampton. Eight of the twenty-one have the top-rated horse clear by more than a pound and a half.

That is a lot of clear opinions for one Friday, and it is why today is a heavier staking day than we have had in a while: four bets and seven points, against three points yesterday. Two of them come from the black type at Ayr, where the figures and the form book agree for once, and two from handicaps at the other end of the card. The filter is unchanged — Classes 1 to 5, no maidens, no novices, nothing sold or claimed afterwards, and nothing restricted to apprentice, amateur or conditional riders.

British EBF Stallions Harry Rosebery Stakes

One of only three margins over four pounds today in a field of eight or more

Hickory Lad heads our figure by 4.1lb. Phillip Makin's juvenile is the highest-rated horse in the race on official figures as well, on 99, and five furlongs on soft ground at Ayr is about as specific a set of conditions as a two-year-old sprint gets. Our conditions column has him at 61.8, mid-division rather than top, which in a Listed race full of horses who have all been placed at this level is not the mark against him it would be in a handicap.

With soft ground, we would be looking for a six-furlong horse, and he won with a decisive success in the Woodcote at Epsom in June. He has shaped as though still in form since in better company, keeping on very well to finish third in Listed company at York four weeks ago.

Mussab is the nearest at 92.0 and is the better horse on the conditions reading, 63.9 against 61.8. Dance A Jig and Nour are also considered.

Seventeen and a half pounds covers the eight, a wide spread for a Listed race and a sign the field is not as even as the black type suggests. Hickory Lad is top on our figure and third on conditions; Mussab leads the conditions column. Nothing in the race is top on both.Verdict

Arran Scottish Sprint EBF Fillies’ Stakes

The one race today where the figure, the draw, the course record and the ground all say the same thing

Beautiful Diamond is 4.2lb clear and very much looks the one to beat here. A strong pace should suit, the draw is ideal, and she should be able to tuck in behind the pace and be produced late.

She is the winner of three Listed races already at this track, including this one last year, and she produced a career best with a smart third in the Group 2 Temple Stakes at Haydock in May. She disappointed back here the following month but she seems best fresh, and she can bounce back with a bang.

Our conditions column has her at 72.0, second in the race only to Lady Youmzain, who is fifteen pounds adrift on our figure. Heavenly Heather is the nearest at 102.5 on an official mark just a pound below hers, and Fluorescence is the one with the supporting columns — an 84-rated yard and a 91-rated rider — but gives up seven pounds on the handicapper's figures.

Twenty-two pounds covers the fourteen, and the first five are inside eight. Beautiful Diamond is the only one of those five with a conditions reading above 64 — the others are all carrying the trip and the ground rather than relishing them.Verdict

Haynes Hanson & Clark Conditions Stakes

The biggest figure of the day, on the least exposed horse on the card

Bin Jahwar comes out 5.9lb clear and pairs the only 100-rated yard on the card with a 97-rated rider, Charlie Appleby and William Buick. He also tops the conditions column at 73.9. On the face of it that is four separate reasons pointing the same way, which almost never happens. We are looking at him as a serious Derby contender for 2027 and we have already taken an ante-post position on him.

Bin Jahwar is closely related to the smart two-year-old mile winner Turgenev, by Dubawi, who stayed a mile and a quarter, and is a half-brother to three winners — including the smart 1¼m to 15f winner Manobo, by Sea The Stars, and Tagabawa, a useful winner up to a mile and a half who won over 8.6f as a juvenile, by New Approach. The dam won up to 10.4f and took a mile race as a two-year-old. He is a smart performer in the making, holds a Group 1 entry next month, and has the scope for plenty of improvement. He is the one to beat.

Four of the ten carry provisional figures — Bin Jahwar and Impasto among them — too few runs to rate properly, and seven of the ten have no official mark at all. We publish them rather than leave gaps in the card, but a provisional rating at the head of a race is a flag, not a recommendation.Verdict

Slater Menswear Handicap

The only handicap on the card with a double-figure field and a margin over two pounds

Cascade Hall is 2.6lb clear, and that combination — a margin over two pounds in a handicap with a double-figure field — occurs exactly once on today's card. Jim Goldie's front-runner has won decisively three times this year, including at this course. He escapes a penalty for a 21-length success at Chester seven days ago and, while that form can be taken with a pinch of salt because others may simply have floundered in the soft ground, he should take all the beating.

His conditions reading of 62.3 is the best of anything near the head of the market, which matters more than usual here: a mile and five furlongs on soft ground at Ayr in September is a test that suits a specific type, and our conditions figure is built from each horse's own record under exactly those headings. The yard figure is 92. The one genuine reservation is the draw — nine of eleven — though over this trip the stalls position is worth a good deal less than it would be in the sprints earlier on the card.

Ebony Maw at 65.1 is the obvious danger and has the better rider figure on 96, with a conditions reading a tenth of a point behind Cascade Hall's. Further down, Furhaan is the conditions pick of the whole race at 69.4 with a 92-rated yard, but our ability column has him sixth, and there is a limit to how far the conditions block can carry a horse when it is worth a tenth of the weight.

Our ratings — Ayr 17:20

Ten pounds covers the eleven. Cascade Hall heads both our overall figure and the conditions column among the principals, which is a rarer thing than it sounds — on yesterday's card no horse in any featured race managed it. The first two are split by 2.6lb and the next four by two pounds between them, so on our figures this is a two-horse race whatever the market says.

Verdict: Cascade Hall, 2 points win. Win only.

Fitzdares Handicap (Div 2)

A thin margin we are betting anyway, and the reason is in the other three columns

Interstate leads by 1.2lb, which on its own would not get a race into this section. What gets him in is that all four columns point the same way: top of the race on our figure, the strongest yard figure in it on 100 for John Gosden, the joint-best rider figure on 96 for William Buick, and a conditions reading of 63.8 against a race average of 54.

He is a well-related Palace Pier colt. Runner-up three times running before readily landing the odds, in a change of headgear, in a four-runner novice at Newcastle over a mile and a quarter fifteen days ago. He is not taken lightly back in handicap company. He is drawn four of nine over a mile and a quarter at Newbury.

Eight and a third pounds covers eight of the nine; Military Air is a further fifteen pounds adrift on a figure held down by one heavy defeat, and should be read as unrated rather than badly rated. Interstate's lead is small, but it rests on agreement between the columns rather than on one of them out-shouting the rest. The stake reflects the margin, not the confidence.Verdict

Interstate, 1 point win.

The Staking Plan

Seven points staked across four bets, all win only, and one selection published without a stake — a selection is our opinion about a horse, a bet is our opinion about a price. None of the four to be taken at odds-on.

Also on the shortlist

Newbury 14:22 and Newton Abbot 16:55 produced the two widest margins of the day — Sorrengail 6.7lb clear of four rivals, Mr McWhinny nine pounds clear of five. Both are likely to go off well odds-on, so we skip them.

Ayr 15:40, the Bronze Cup, is the opposite problem: twenty-four runners, with French Affair 1.4lb clear. Our figure is not the guide here, but two catch the eye. Eye Of Dubai should run well, third in the Silver Cup last year and off a mark five pounds below that. A shout-out to Woven as well, second in this race twelve months ago and second in the 2022 Silver Cup — a runner-up effort at York in June shows he is still pretty useful, and a recent outing at Haydock after a short break should have put him spot on for this. Good luck if you are getting involved.

Newton Abbot 16:22 has Rebel Tribesman 2.3lb clear and reads well, but three of the six runners carry a figure dragged down by a single heavy defeat in their recent form. Happy to let him run at a price nearing evens. Watching brief.

Ayr 13:20 came out an exact dead heat on our figures, split by the conditions column with a tenth of a pound added to record which way it fell.

Newbury 16:07 has Elarak 1.6lb clear of nine, and he would hold a good chance on form. A three-time winner in 2025, he is yet to score this season but has progressed again — runner-up in the Buckingham Palace at Royal Ascot over seven furlongs in June, and in a seven-runner Listed event at Newmarket over six on good last time. He is currently around the 7.6 mark on Betfair, and if he reached 8.2 he would be of interest. Spy Chief is the obvious danger.

About the OOS rating

The figures in the tables are our own. OOS blends a horse’s ability, how well today’s conditions suit it, and the strength of its yard and rider into a single number, set on the official-rating scale of the race it runs in. Cond scores ground, trip, class, draw and likely pace shape from the horse’s own record under each. Trn and Jky are current form figures for the trainer and jockey. Every figure is read against the rest of that field, never across races — a 96 at Ayr and an 86 at Newbury are not comparable numbers.
