Reward Hard Endeavour at Ascot
Betting on horse racing has been a hard endeavour this week, low grade handicaps - end of season 2yo races and changeable ground. It is hard to keep turnover ticking along. There are seven races at Ascot and plenty of racing elsewhere, but having worked through the cards, and the video replays, created the ratings with AI - only one horse makes the final cut.
That selection runs in the 4:48 Ascot Hospitality Handicap, a fiercely competitive Class 2 contest over the straight mile. Thirteen runners go to post, several arrive with persuasive claims and you could make a respectable case for half the field. It is exactly the sort of race in which discipline matters.
Our one bet today is Hard Endeavor, trained by Jane Chapple-Hyam and ridden by Rossa Ryan.
The racing conversation
The UK racing timeline is rarely short of opinions on a big-field Ascot handicap, and today is no exception. Arctic Thunder’s hat-trick attempt has attracted support, while Ozat, Moonfall and last year’s winner Classic all have their followers.
Why Hard Endeavor?
Hard Endeavor cost €150,000 as a yearling and has always possessed an attractive profile. By New Bay and out of the Le Havre mare Crisolles, he is a half-brother to three winners, including the useful Son Of Man and Gold As Glass.
There is enough speed in the pedigree for a strongly run mile, but also sufficient stamina for Ascot’s demanding finish. His dam won over distances up to 1m3f, while his successful siblings both stayed beyond their winning distances as juveniles.
Hard Endeavor looked a colt of considerable promise when winning a Kempton novice last season. His introduction to handicaps was less straightforward, but there has been clear improvement with each subsequent appearance.
He took a significant step forward when fourth at Sandown in June before producing his best performance in the Coral Challenge over the same course and distance last time. Racing from a mark of 97, he travelled powerfully into contention and briefly hit the front inside the final furlong, only for Indalo to catch him close home.
That half-length defeat came in a strong 14-runner Class 2 handicap on good-to-firm ground. It demonstrated that Hard Endeavor can travel, quicken and compete effectively in precisely the sort of race he faces today. He finished comfortably ahead of several seasoned and highly rated handicappers.
The handicapper has raised him 3lb to a mark of 100, but that does not look excessive for a four-year-old with just seven career starts. There may still be more improvement to come.
Today’s conditions
The official going at Ascot is good, good to firm in places, which should be ideal. Hard Endeavor has already shown that he handles a sound surface, while his Kempton success confirms that quicker conditions hold no fears.
Stall three is another positive. Over Ascot’s straight mile, a low draw should give Rossa Ryan options and allow him to follow the pace without using unnecessary energy early. Hard Endeavor has shown that he can settle behind the leaders and move smoothly into a race, which is likely to be important in such a crowded field.
Rossa Ryan replaces Billy Loughnane and looks an excellent booking. If he can produce the colt slightly later than at Sandown, there is every chance Hard Endeavor can reverse that near miss.
The dangers
This is a boiling-hot handicap, and the opposition demands respect.
Arctic Thunder seeks a third consecutive victory and is clearly thriving. Ozat remains potentially well treated and was third over course and distance last time, while Classic brings proven high-class handicap form. Moonfall receives the three-year-old allowance and is already an Ascot winner, although his wide draw presents a tactical challenge.
Spanish Voice, Blue RC and Zennor Storm(on a recovery mission after flopping on soft ground) also have plausible claims. With so many possible winners, this is not a race in which we want to be aggressive at short odds.
Hard Endeavor, however, combines current form, suitable conditions, a favourable draw and the potential for further progress. In a field containing several exposed older handicappers, that makes him the most appealing proposition.
