Glorious Goodwood Day Five: The Festival Ends but there are Opportunities elsewhere.

Saturday 1 August 2026 — Goodwood, Newmarket, Thirsk, Doncaster, Lingfield & Hamilton

Yesterday

Three bets, three losses, minus three points. There is no way to dress that up and no reason to try.

Scoville was unplaced in the Golden Mile, where Archivist came from nowhere to win at 16/1. Innichen ran his race and finished third at 13/2, beaten by Revels at 11/1. Mighty Magnus was unplaced in a five-runner sprint at Musselburgh.

Every one of those was a single point from our lowest confidence tier, which is where the entire card sat once Beagle Bay was withdrawn. That tier is now nought from five across two days. Five losing bets is not proof of anything, but the premise of tiered staking is that thin margins win less often, and so far nothing contradicts it.

The vindication came in a race we didn't touch. Talk Of New York was beaten at 2/5. He was thirteen points clear on our composite — the widest margin the model has produced all week — and we passed him because the market had backed him into 1.48, below our own fair price of 1.54. Shayem beat him at 17/2. A wide rating margin on an odds-on shot is easy to achieve and tells you very little, and that is precisely why we set a price floor rather than a margin floor.

The uncomfortable part sits alongside it. Three other horses we passed on price won — Galen at 3/1, Silver Lake at 4/5, and Nikovo at 3/1, who won going away by nearly three lengths at Newmarket. Across two days our passed top-rated selections now stand at nine, of which five won, for a notional plus eight points. That number is meant to prove the price filter pays for itself. At the moment it is saying the opposite. We will continue to review.

First, the ground

Good to firm at Goodwood, Newmarket, Doncaster and Lingfield. Good at Thirsk and Hamilton. That is what our conditions model has been run on across all six meetings and it matches the declared going, so nothing needs discounting today.

Worth noting for the feature: the Stewards' Cup has a full field of 28 down Goodwood's straight six, and the draw has historically dominated it — only two winners from single-figure stalls in the last decade, with high numbers strongly favoured.

How to read today's selections

Two numbers, and both gates have to open.

Clear-by margin — how far our top-rated is clear of the second horse on the composite rating. Above 6 with everything else aligned is a maximum bet at 5 points. Above 5 is 3 points. Two to five is 2 points. Below two is 1 point.

EV — the available price against our fair price. Nothing gets backed below 5%, and nothing gets backed below its target price.

A point is half a percent of bank.

Today is the busiest card we have had — nineteen races across six meetings — and it produces six bets. That is more than the last two days combined, and the reason is not that we like more horses. It is that we are getting our target tissue prices.

13:33 Newmarket — Class 1 Listed, 1m4f, fillies

BET: Gone By. 2 points. Fair 6.64, target 7.00, available 12.00. Clear by 2.6.

The largest edge on the card by a distance, and the one that needs the most care.

Ralph Beckett's filly bumped into useful prospects on her first two starts, made no mistake when long odds-on for a Ripon maiden in June, then took a Salisbury handicap on her handicap debut over a mile and a half a month ago — relishing the longer trip, going on over three furlongs out, being tackled over two and proving determined. Timeform's note reads that she may well have achieved more at Ripon than she was credited for, that there will still be mileage in her handicap mark, and — the line that matters — that the last filly to win this was the same stable's Simple Verse, who did so by an even narrower margin from a mark eight pounds lower, and who took the Lillie Langtry next time before the St Leger after that.

She is a €140,000 yearling who will be suited by a mile and three-quarters and is open to further progress. This is a clear step up in class and she is capable of better again.

Now the number, and the problem. Our fair price is 6.64. She was 9.00 last night. She is 12.00 now. That is an 81% overlay, comfortably the biggest we have recorded, and it comes from a filly who has drifted a third of her price overnight while remaining our top-rated.

We have seen this shape before, and recently. Supplicate drifted 2.00 to 2.94 last Thursday on the same profile — top-rated, well fancied, money leaving — and won at 3.25. That is one data point in favour of taking it. Against that, the clear-by margin here is only 2.6, our second-lowest tier, and the money leaving her is going somewhere.

Take 7.00 or better. Two points — the stake follows the 2.6-point margin, not the 81% edge.

Notebook: Revoir is our second-rated at 6.36 fair against 8.80 available, a 38% overlay in her own right. Five times a listed-level runner-up, and she needs to shrug off a below-par run over this course and distance a fortnight ago.

14:25 Goodwood — Glorious Stakes (Group 3, 1m3f218y)

BET: In My Teens. 3 points. Fair 4.52, target 4.70, available 5.30. Clear by 5.5 — our strongest signal today.

The only Goodwood bet on the closing card, and the widest margin we have on any race.

She proved a different proposition upped in trip when landing a valuable handicap at the Curragh five weeks ago, and the manner of it is the case. She was in touch, travelled strongly, was produced to lead over a furlong out and quickened clear to win readily by seven lengths. Timeform's note reads that a steep rise looks assured, that she is clearly a smart performer when things fall right, that black type looks little more than a formality on that performance, and that she remains open to further progress in this sphere.

She is a second foal, half-sister to a horse who stays twenty-one and a half furlongs, out of a mare who won on the Flat and over hurdles. She stays a mile and a half, acts on soft and good to firm, and is still unexposed.

This is her first run at this level. That is the honest caveat, and it is a real one — she is taking on Al Aasy, a dual Group 3 winner going for a hat-trick in a race he has won each of the last two years, and Opportunity, who took the Duke of Edinburgh at Royal Ascot in the style of a horse ready for pattern company. Both are shorter than we make them: Al Aasy 3.90 against our 4.81, Opportunity 3.45 against our 4.58.

We think the market has the three of them in the wrong order. Our composite has In My Teens five and a half points clear of Al Aasy, and at 5.30 against a fair price of 4.52 we are getting 17% the best of it.

One thing to watch: she has been backed from 7.00 overnight to 5.30, which makes her a steamer. On our record this week, steamers have rewarded striking immediately — Enceladus, Flann Sunna and Exclusive Code were all struck well above their eventual returns.

Take 4.70 or better, and take it rather than wait.

15:35 Goodwood — Coral Stewards' Cup (Heritage Handicap, Class 2, 6f, 28 runners)

Top rated: Far Above Dream. Fair 11.16, target 12.00, available 8.60. NO BET.

The richest sprint handicap of the British season, twenty-eight runners down the straight six, and our model separates the top two by a point and a half. That is exactly what a race like this should produce, and it is why we are watching it rather than betting into it.

Far Above Dream is a low-mileage four-year-old going for four from four over course and distance, drawn in stall 23 — and the draw matters here more than almost anywhere, with only two winners from single-figure stalls in the last ten years. He scored over this course and distance for the third time in May, completed a hat-trick at Newbury, and was a fine fourth of twenty-seven in the Wokingham, where he travelled well and was forced to switch under two out. Timeform's read is that it would be premature to take that as proof the handicapper has caught up with him. Kieran Shoemark rides.

We do not disagree with any of it. We make him 11.16 and he is 8.60 — 23% shorter than our number, on a race we cannot rank with any confidence.

Dark Thirty is 15.00 against our 16.98, which is close to fair. He was half a length second of twenty to Sondad at the Curragh a fortnight ago, clear of the remainder, and is a big player on the book. Sondad, who beat him that day, is drawn 21.

Notebook, and it is a large one: Berkshire Whisper is our third-rated at 26.17 fair against 55.00 available, having drifted from 34.00 overnight. That is a 110% overlay. He kept on when badly hampered approaching the final hundred yards in a Newbury handicap won by today's favourite, and is better judged on that than the bare eighth-of-fourteen. A big-field scenario should suit. We are not backing him, because our staking arms only the top-rated — but in a race where the top-rated is a point and a half clear and 23% too short, a 110% overlay on the third-rated is precisely the case we have been logging all week.

16:10 Goodwood — Class 2 Handicap, 7f

Top rated: We're Goosers. Clear by 1.6. NO BET.

4.20 against a fair price of 5.00 is 16% the wrong way and the margin is thin. He was last of thirty in the Britannia and shaped as if amiss, having been strong in the betting beforehand, and he has been gelded since — worth another chance, but not at this price.

Marengo Storm at 8.60 against our 8.75 is close to fair, with cheekpieces on and a good draw.

Away from Goodwood — the other five bets

BET: Northern Express, 14:08 Thirsk (Class 2, 7f218y). 1 point. Fair 6.40, target 6.60, available 9.00. Clear by 1.5.

A likeable course-and-distance winner who ended a long losing run at York last time, coming from mid-field out wide, challenging inside the final furlong and edging ahead close home. Timeform notes that he has kept better company than this in recent seasons, has not been rated this low since he was a five-year-old, and still looks well treated off two pounds higher. All four of his wins have come at York over that trip, with five further seconds there.

He has drifted from 6.00 to 9.00 overnight, which is a 41% overlay on a fair price of 6.40. The margin is 1.5, so this is a single point whatever the price says.

BET: Rollthedicebaby, 14:13 Newmarket (Class 2, 6f). 1 point. Fair 5.03, target 5.20, available 6.00. Clear by 1.7.

Second on debut at Goodwood in May and a ready winner back there over six furlongs on heavy in June. She weakened to finish mid-division in the Super Sprint at Newbury over five, but there are reasons to forgive that — different ground, a shorter trip, and the disadvantaged far-side group. Back at six furlongs she can resume her progression. A 19% overlay, small market, one point.

BET: Sierra Sands, 15:23 Newmarket (Class 4, 7f). 1 point. Fair 3.85, target 4.00, available 4.60. Clear by 1.7.

Arrives on a course hat-trick, the latest coming at the expense of Lion of Mali over this trip at the July meeting — from near last off an ordinary pace, getting there a touch cosily, and defying a four-pound rise in a stronger race than the one before. The form has been boosted since and he is likely still well treated off two pounds higher. Lion of Mali reopposes and there should not be much between them again.

He has drifted from 3.50 to 4.60. A 19% overlay, but the market has barely £260 in it and has not formed. Take 4.00 or better and expect the price to move.

BET: Vidmiyr, 16:15 Doncaster (Class 4, 7f). 2 points. Fair 4.64, target 4.80, available 5.50. Clear by 2.2.

Won at Lingfield in May and posted good placed efforts at Lingfield and Chester before his first below-par run of the season back at six furlongs at York. He has been gelded since, is best at seven furlongs to a mile, usually races prominently, and appeals as one who should bounce back in calmer waters.

The honest caveat is severe: under forty pounds has been matched on this market. That price is not a price yet, it is a placeholder. Do not strike until the book forms.

And two Strong-tier selections that are no-bets on price: Weleyff in the 14:30 at Doncaster is 5.4 points clear — the second-widest margin on the card — and available at 2.12 against a target of 2.28. Corolla Point in the 19:30 at Hamilton is 5.1 clear and 4.10 against a target of 4.70. Two of our three widest margins today, both walked past.

Confirmed exposure: 10 points — 5% of bank across six bets. No maximum-bet candidate: our widest margin today is In My Teens at 5.5, short of the 6.0 threshold. Prices are Betfair exchange at 07:00 UK and will move.

The discipline note

Six bets and ten points is our biggest commitment of the week, and it arrives the morning after three straight losses. That ordering is worth naming, because it is exactly the pattern that gets people into trouble — and it is not what is happening here. Nothing about yesterday has entered today's numbers. The bets are here because prices are in line, and the count is high because nineteen races across six meetings simply throws up more opportunities than nine did.

But look at where the stakes are and be honest about what they represent. Only one selection today, In My Teens, comes from a race we rate with any confidence. The other five have margins of 2.6, 1.5, 1.7, 1.7 and 2.2 — thin opinions attached to good prices. Our bottom tier is nought from five over two days. If today goes the same way, the model will have told us something useful about where its edge actually lives, and it will have cost us five points to learn it.

Note also the two we walked past. Weleyff is 5.4 points clear and Corolla Point 5.1 — two of the three widest margins on the card — and both are no-bets because the price is wrong. Meanwhile Gone By carries two points on a margin half that size because she is 12.00 and we make her 6.64. That inversion is the method in one line: the rating decides whether we have a view, the price decides whether it is worth money, and the margin decides how much.

Two things we are watching in ourselves. The first is Gone By's drift. Nine to twelve overnight on our own top-rated is the same shape as Supplicate last Thursday, and Supplicate won — but one instance is an anecdote, and money leaving a horse is information we do not have a model for. The second is the calibration question from yesterday, which today's card cannot answer but tomorrow's data can: if our fair prices on top-rated horses run consistently longer than the market's, every target is set too high.

And the standing item. Our staking arms only the top-rated, so today we walk past Berkshire Whisper at 55.00 in the Stewards' Cup, Revoir at 8.80, Ammes at 17.50 and Consent at 7.00 — overlays between 18% and 110%, all sitting behind a top-rated we have declined. Six weeks of logging them will answer whether that rule is protecting us or costing us. Yesterday it cost us American Affair, who won the King George at 12/1 having been flagged at 21.0.

Watch the markets in the final two minutes. The true price forms late, and we settle at Betfair SP as always.

Good luck.
