Just One Bet Today Continuing a quiet week

Yesterday

Two bets, two losses, minus three points. Both went close enough to sting and neither result changes anything about how they were struck.

One point bet Sarangpur finished third at Brighton. He came here on a roll and ultimately failed to meet market expectations, but largely because he raced inefficiently through the middle of the race — he got lit up when the outsider of the field made a move up his inside, raced freely from mid-field, was outpaced two furlongs out, and his challenge over the final furlong flattened out. This mark needn't be his limit if he channels that enthusiasm a little better, and he goes in the notebook rather than the bin.

Interstate is the harder one to file. Two points, drifted all day out to 4.7, beaten a neck. He ran a little green when asked for his effort, and the honest reading is that Oisin Murphy was the main difference in getting Edwin Hubble home in front. Interstate is an impressive physical specimen who still seems to be learning his trade, and he is in excellent hands with John Gosden — but that is a horse for the tracker, not consolation for the ledger.

That leaves us 4 points down in what has been a quiet week.

Today's Action

First, the ground

Every model input today ran on an assumption of good across the board — Musselburgh, Brighton, Thirsk, Haydock and Newmarket. That is an input, not a reading, and it is worth saying plainly: if the declared going firms up in the August sunshine, the ground scores shift, and anything struck early is struck on an assumption. Check the declared going before following anything below. None of today's key horses has a form profile that collapses on quicker ground, but the principle stands regardless.

How to read today's selections

The rating is only half of it. A horse can be clearly the best in the race and still be a terrible bet, and today the second half of that sentence does almost all the work.

The ability rating is a composite built from official marks, speed figures, trainer and jockey records, and course-and-distance evidence. The clear-by margin is the gap between the top-rated runner and the second, and it drives the stake:

  • Under 2.0 — no bet, logged as a pass
  • 2.0 to 3.0 — 1 point
  • 3.0 to 5.0 — 2 points
  • 5.0 and above — 3 points
  • Maximum bet — 5 points, and only when six separate conditions hold at once

One point is half a percent of bank.

The price test comes last and every bet is provisional on it. A qualifying rating with no value against our tissue is a pass, however good the story. Everything settles at Betfair SP; prices quoted are live exchange prices at the time of writing and will move.

The bet

7:12 Newmarket — Handicap, 6f, Class 4

FENLANDER — 1 point

Clear-by 2.6, which puts this on the bottom rung of the ladder. Fair 4.94, target 5.10, available 5.60 — a 13% edge at the current price.

A keen-going sort who took seventeen runs to get off the mark and has been on the upgrade all of a sudden, completing a hat-trick at Nottingham in June. He then went close to a four-timer over this course and distance three weeks ago, upped in grade — led, showed his typical good speed, was only headed inside the final furlong and kept on to go down by three quarters of a length to Spring Bloom. He did not go down without a fight.

The line that matters: Spring Bloom reopposes today, and Fenlander is 6 lb better off with him for a three-quarter-length beating. Our tissue makes Spring Bloom 20% too short at 6.4, and Fiscal Policy — our second-rated, whose last two York runs came on the wrong flank and can be overlooked — 15% too short at the same price.

Now the caveat, and it is the shape we flagged above. Fenlander was 4.0 last night and is 5.6 this morning — a drifting top-rated again. Take 5.10 or better for 1 point bet.

The passes

3:20 Musselburgh — Handicap, 7f, Class 4 — NO BET

Clear-by 0.3, the tightest top of any race today. Eagle Bay heads the composite — two from two for the current yard this year, dominant at Chester six weeks ago — but he has the widest draw of all to overcome, and Jonny Concrete, who won at York under a useful claimer two weeks back, sits three tenths of a point behind him. At 5.3 against a fair 4.95 Eagle Bay's price is actually fine. The margin is not, and the margin rules. Our notebook horse Misunderstood also takes his place in what is a very competitive race. Watch the market so far as he is concerned and heed any market moves.

The market angle here is Gweedore — five course-and-distance wins, 7 lb below his last winning mark, blinkers on first time. The composite has him fourth, and at 10.0 against a tissue of 10.4 he is priced dead fair. A good story at a fair price is entertainment, not an edge.

3:50 Musselburgh — Handicap, 5f, Class 4 — NO BET

Clear-by 1.5. Woohoo is top-rated and deserves to be — better than ever when second of twenty at Goodwood ten days ago, first home on his side of the track and clear of the rest, back down in trip and grade today. Everyone can see it: he is 3.4 against our tissue of 3.33. Fair to the decimal. Montezuma, beaten a nose here seven days ago, is a point and a half back on the composite. No margin, no value, no bet.

4:00 Brighton — Handicap, 6f, Class 4 — NO BET

Clear-by 0.7, and the price is 16% the wrong way on top. Marcellinus has made the frame on all three starts since his Bath win and the market has noticed, backing him to 5.4 against our 6.4.

Notebook, and it is the biggest number on the card: Ancient Times, our second-rated, is 25.0 against a tissue of 10.8 — a 131% overlay, having drifted from 13 overnight. He backed up his Epsom win from just 2 lb higher when second at Doncaster nine days later and is nudged up only 1 lb today. We are not backing him, because our staking arms only the top-rated — but he goes straight into the standing log of overlays sitting behind a declined number one.

4:10 Thirsk — Handicap, 1m4f, Class 3 — NO BET

This is the frustrating one. Clear-by 2.2 — a qualifying margin, the only one on the card besides Fenlander. Sudu is a strong traveller who endured a luckless Newbury reappearance, gained compensation with a wide-margin Epsom win, and had a forgivable run in a falsely-run race at Goodwood. First-time hood today. Everything about the profile says progressive.

And he is 3.35 against our tissue of 4.45 — 25% too short. The market loves the same story we do, and loves it harder. The ladder position is set at a point with a target of 4.90, and unless the market walks a long way toward us before the off, it never triggers. Right horse, wrong price, no bet. We have walked past wider margins than this for the same reason and will keep doing it.

6:53 Haydock — Handicap, 5f, Class 3 — NO BET

Clear-by 1.5, price dead level. Casino Star was edged out in a Hamilton maiden four weeks ago by a subsequent Molecomb third, and if that form is read literally he is well treated off an opening mark of 77. The market has read it literally: 3.0 against our tissue of 2.97. Both gates shut.

Notebook: Rotelle, our second-rated, is 9.8 against a tissue of 5.0 — a 95% overlay. He beat a subsequent winner with something up his sleeve on debut at Nottingham, was gelded during four months off, and met trouble at a crucial stage on his return at Newcastle. Better judged on the debut. Logged, not backed, same rule as above.

The card at a glance

One bet, five passes. Confirmed exposure: 1 point — half a percent of bank. Sudu sits armed at 4.90 and will almost certainly stay theoretical.

The discipline note

A losing week is exactly when a card like this is dangerous, because the temptation is to go looking for the bets that the numbers have not produced. Today's numbers produced one.

Look at why. In four of the six races the market and the tissue agree almost to the tick — Woohoo at 3.4 against 3.33, Casino Star at 3.0 against 2.97, Gweedore at 10.0 against 10.4. When the market agrees with us there is nothing to buy. Our two biggest overlays of the day, Ancient Times at 131% and Rotelle at 95%, both sit behind top-rated horses we declined, and our only qualifying margin apart from the bet is 25% too short. The one race where the rating and the price point the same way is Newmarket, and that is where the single point goes.

The standing items, then. The overlay log gains Ancient Times and Rotelle, and six weeks of that ledger will tell us whether arming only the top-rated is protecting us or costing us. And the drifter file gains Fenlander — the third drifting top-rated in eight days, after one winner and one neck defeat. If he wins, drift means nothing. If he is beaten, we will start asking whether money leaving our number one should be a gate of its own.

Watch the market in the final two minutes. The true price forms late, and we settle at Betfair SP as always.

Good luck.
