Racing Preview Saturday 19 September 2026

Ayr Gold Cup day, and the best Saturday of the autumn so far — twenty-two races rated across five meetings, with soft ground at Ayr and Chester and good at Newbury and Newmarket. We are staking thirteen points across seven bets, the heaviest day of the season.

Three of those bets are in Group and Listed company, where the figures and the form book are saying the same thing, and the other four are in handicaps. Against that, eleven of the seventeen races previewed below get a selection and no stake. That is deliberate: a Saturday card of this quality throws up a lot of races where our top-rated horse is half a pound clear of the second and a pound clear of the fourth, and half a pound is not an opinion worth backing.

The widest clear margin on the whole card

Starlust heads our figure by 3.8lb, and nothing else today comes close to that margin in a field of eight or more. Ralph Beckett's five-year-old is also the best horse in the race on official figures, on 112, and he is the only runner rated above 110.

He has been kept to a light programme since taking the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint in 2024 and a brief spell at stud, but there is nothing stale about the recent form. He was beaten only by Bacio in the Nunthorpe and ran another honest race to make the frame in the Flying Five at the Curragh seven days ago. Two efforts of that standard inside a month is the profile of a horse holding his form, not one coming to the end of a campaign.

The reservation is the draw. Stall nine of eleven over the minimum trip at Newbury is not where you want to be, and our conditions column has him at 57.1, below the race average — the draw is one of the five headings that column is built from, so the figure is already carrying that penalty and he still comes out nearly four pounds clear. Expect him to be dropped in behind Miss Yechance and Diligent Harry and produced late.

Just under eighteen pounds covers the eleven. Starlust is top on the overall figure and only eighth on conditions, which is the draw and nothing else; six of the ten behind him have a better conditions reading and none of them is within three and a half pounds on ability.Verdict

Ladbrokes Handicap

Four horses inside two pounds, and we are taking the fourth

Northern Express is top rated on 93.7, half a pound clear, but he was flat at York last time and we are not convinced the figure is describing the horse who turns up today. Theoryofeverything is next and has much the best of the draw in stall one, though he found heavy ground beyond him on his latest start and our conditions column is unenthusiastic at 48.8, the lowest of the front four. Spoken Truth won with a bit in hand at Ripon and is only five pounds higher for it, which keeps him in the argument.

Our preference is Hawksbill, and it is a video verdict rather than a figures one. He is fourth on our rating, 1.7lb off the top, but he has the best conditions reading of the four at 62.7 and a draw in four. Watch his York run again: he was given far too much to do, was still being niggled along when the race was effectively over, and was finishing quickest of all when it no longer mattered. He has been threatening to win for a while and the handicapper has not yet caught up with him.

Thirteen pounds covers the fourteen and the first six are inside three, so the figure is not choosing this race for us. That's Amore tops the conditions column at 72.4 with the best yard and rider figures in the field and is sixth on the overall rating — a reminder that the conditions block is a tenth of the weight, not a tip.Verdict

Eleven pounds covers twelve — the definition of a race to watch, not bet

Pearl River tops our figure on 100.8. He goes particularly well at York and produced his best effort in some time when second of fifteen there a fortnight ago; the return to this longer trip should suit, and he has a soft-ground win at Nottingham on his record.

Bulletin is next. His Newmarket run in July was poor, but that came off a very tight turnaround and we are prepared to draw a line through it. Primo Lara picks up Ryan Moore for Jane Chapple-Hyam and arrives in the middle of a good run — two wins in July, a creditable fourth in a York heritage handicap, and a win from eleven at Kempton over a mile and a half a fortnight ago. Four pounds higher, he is not obviously out of it.

The one that interests us most is Insanity, who is sixth on our figure but has the best conditions reading of the six at 62.8. He has had a light season: a promising second at Pontefract in April, then a seven-week break and a sixth of ten at Ascot forty-two days ago on which he looked to be coming back to himself. He should be fitter for that. But sixth of twelve in a race covered by eleven pounds is a selection made on hope as much as evidence, and that is not a bet.

Pearl River leads by a pound and a half but has the worst conditions reading of the first four at 53.4. French Duke is rated 102 by the handicapper, fourteen pounds clear of Pearl River's 88, and still only comes out fourth on our figure — the clearest sign on the card of how much weight the handicapper has taken out of this race.Verdict

Turners Fillies' Handicap

Half a pound between first and second, and our second is not the one the preview expected

Food For Thought tops our figure on 86.1 for His Majesty The King. The Dubawi filly won a mile-and-a-quarter Nottingham maiden in June and has run well in handicaps since — runner-up twice, at Salisbury and on the July course here, then a close fifth of fourteen at York twenty-nine days ago. The drop back to a mile looks likely to help.

Our second is Thaluna on 85.6, not Stormy Music, who is third on 84.2. Thaluna ran a promising race first time up over seven furlongs here but has not built on it, and she was far too free when third of four on the July course last time. Back at a mile she may still be worth another chance; her yard figure of 98 is the best in the race.

Stormy Music has the more obvious claims on form — the Night of Thunder filly won a mile handicap on the July course in August and was desperately unlucky not to follow up, getting a gap only inside the final furlong when third of five there since. She runs off the same mark. On our figures the first four are covered by 2.1lb, which is why we have a preference and not a bet.

The tightest race on the card — 1.3lb covers four

Ecureuil Secret is top rated on 109.2 and has the best conditions reading of the front four at 64.5, but the margin is 0.2lb and the first four are separated by less than a pound and a half. Six and a half pounds covers all seven.

There is no honest way to present that as an opinion. A margin of two-tenths of a pound in a seven-runner Listed race is our figure telling us it cannot split them, and the right response is to say so.

We are backing the fourth horse on our own figure, and the reason is the weights

Arapaho Gold is top rated on 106.7 and he has earned it. Unbeaten in four, he won maiden and novice company at Thirsk, stepped up to Listed level at Newbury in July without fuss, and then showed a first-rate attitude to land the Gimcrack at York last month on ground with give in it. His conditions reading of 81.0 is the best in the race by five pounds. He sets the standard under his penalty.

We are opposing him with Nabati, and the case is arithmetic rather than sentiment. The two met over six furlongs in that Newbury Listed race and Arapaho Gold won by a neck. Today Nabati meets him on 3lb better terms, back at six furlongs after a step up in trip, and a neck is worth well under three pounds. In between he completed a routine task at Newmarket and then ran a better race than the bare result at Doncaster last week, third of nine over seven furlongs in another Listed event after being heavily backed.

Our figure has him fourth on 103.6, three pounds adrift, but he is the Charlie Appleby and William Buick runner — yard 100, rider 97, the strongest pair of support figures anywhere on the card — and his conditions reading of 75.8 is second only to the favourite's. Jolivette is the other live danger, second on our figure after a fine third of seventeen to Libertango in the Lowther at York, clear of the remainder.

Our rating does not know about the penalty structure — it reads ability against the race average and leaves the weights to the racecard. Arapaho Gold is 3.1lb clear of Nabati on the figure and hands him 3lb on the track. That is the whole bet.Verdict

A tenth of a pound at the head of fifteen runners

Rogue Allegiance and Golden Strike are split by 0.1lb, and the first six are covered by two and a half. Ten pounds separates the whole field. There is nothing here for us and we will not manufacture a view.

Rogue Allegiance is drawn one, Golden Strike seven. On the published card this is the kind of margin that gets decided by the conditions column, and Golden Strike actually has the better reading of the two — the ability block is what puts Rogue Allegiance in front, by the smallest amount our figures can express.Verdict

Ladbrokes Ayr Silver Cup Handicap

2.8lb clear in a twenty-five runner sprint handicap — rare enough to be worth a stake

Deep Havana tops our figure on 97.6, nearly three pounds clear of twenty-four rivals, and he also has the second-best conditions reading in the race at 66.5. He made nothing of a seventeen-month absence for his new yard when winning an eighteen-runner handicap at Thirsk twenty-two days ago, and the horse he beat has won since, so the form is holding up. He carries a 5lb penalty for it.

The doubt is the ground. He is unproven with give in it — but his sire Havana Grey is not: the progeny run to an A/E of 1.25 on softer surfaces, which is a strong positive rather than a neutral one, and we are prepared to take it on trust at this margin.

Desert Falcon is the one the market will fancy, back to himself after a summer breathing operation and a close sixth of twenty-one in the Portland at Doncaster last week. Our figure is much cooler on him — tenth on 90.8, with a conditions reading of only 52.9, because every one of his wins has come on good or faster and he is by Gleneagles, whose runners are a flat 1.00 with give in the ground. Havana Blue is our second on 94.8 and has a genuine squeak: he ended a long losing run at Newmarket in August, followed up from thirteen at Ascot a fortnight ago, and takes a 5lb penalty in that mood. This asks more of him, but he is not one to dismiss.

Thirteen and a half pounds covers twenty-five, which is tight, and Deep Havana still finds nearly three of it. In a cavalry-charge sprint handicap that combination — big field, narrow spread, one horse clear — is the shape we most want to see.Verdict

John Smith's Nursery Handicap

The narrowest spread of any race today — 4.3lb covers eleven

Absolute Diamond is top rated on 71.6 and is drawn one, which around Chester is close to a gift. We cannot back her. Her Salisbury run last time was poor with no obvious excuse attached to it, and a nursery is not the place to forgive that on the strength of a stall.

Somers Isles is preferred for Andrew Balding, 0.4lb behind on the figure but with the best yard figure in the race at 97. He has been placed on both starts, most recently third of ten at Newbury over six furlongs last month, and the winner of that race has scored since. He now steps up to seven, gets a good draw of his own in two, and makes his nursery debut on only his third outing — the profile of a horse the handicapper has had one look at rather than three.

Four and a third pounds covers all eleven and six-tenths of a pound covers the first four. Nurseries are lightly raced animals with two or three runs behind them, so the ability block has very little to work with; read this table as a shortlist, not a ranking.Verdict

Four horses inside 1.1lb and a spread of under eight pounds

Gonna Fly is top rated on 96.5, four-tenths of a pound ahead of Boyfriend, with Mr Swivell and Almekarem level a further seven-tenths back. That is four horses inside 1.1lb, and it tells you exactly how competitive this handicap is.

Gonna Fly won two novice events before failing to make an impression in handicap company at Chester and Goodwood, neither of them conventional tracks. He was much better on a fair course at Sandown three weeks ago, fourth of eleven on soft at 9/1, and he still looks well treated. We just cannot back a four-tenths margin in a Class 2.

Seven and four-fifths of a pound covers thirteen runners, the second-narrowest spread on the card. Boyfriend leads the conditions column among the principals; Gonna Fly's 56.8 is below the race average, so his lead comes entirely from the ability block.Verdict

Turners Parks Group Handicap (Div 1)

Rajaking heads the figure on 82.9 and also tops the conditions column at 64.2. He was back to his best when landing a twenty-one runner handicap at York over six furlongs in July and then gave first run to the front pair when a close third of thirteen on the July course four weeks ago. He runs off the same mark and is weighted to go close.

Expert Agent is second on 82.0. He doubled his 2026 tally over course and distance in May and remains in good order; he had a great deal to do when eighth of thirteen over six furlongs on the July course last month, and races off a mark 2lb lower today.

Our preference is Explosive Finnish, third on 81.6 and 1.3lb off the top. He is the progressive one of the three: a first win at York over five and a half furlongs in July, then a very good third of twenty-one in another race over the same trip there thirteen days ago off a mark 6lb higher. That form has been franked since. A pound and a third in a nine-runner Class 4 is not a betting margin, so he is a selection and nothing more.

Seven and seven-tenths of a pound covers nine. Rajaking is the only horse in the race top-two on both the overall figure and the conditions column, which is the strongest thing our numbers say about this heat — and we are still going against him.Verdict

Firth of Clyde Fillies’ Stakes

The biggest bet of the day, and it is not on our top-rated horse

Dark Issue tops our figure on 96.3, 2.1lb clear. She ran well in the Albany at Royal Ascot and was only just edged out when second of eleven in a Group 3 at Salisbury on good to soft sixteen days ago, travelling strongly for a long way. She has a live chance in this company.

We are taking Silent Beauty to beat her, and this is where our own columns disagree with each other. She is second on the overall figure but tops the conditions reading at 68.8, ahead of Dark Issue's 65.8, with a yard figure of 88 against 77. The €1,000,000 yearling made a striking impression when winning first time out at Yarmouth in May, then ran no race at all in the Albany in June. She put that behind her with a three-length win in a Listed race at Ripon nineteen days ago, and she has a win on good to soft already on her record.

A filly of her ability, coming off a performance like that, with the ground and the trip in her favour on our own conditions measure, is a genuine improver rather than an exposed one. Two points is the biggest single win stake we have put up this month, and we are comfortable with it.

Dark Issue and Silent Beauty are rated 97 by the handicapper apiece, so the official view is that there is nothing between them; ours puts Dark Issue two pounds up on ability and Silent Beauty three up on conditions.Verdict

What a race!

One of the highlights of the calendar, and twenty-five go to post. Binhareer is our top rated on 110.7, drawn two. He has won over course and distance, can carry his head awkwardly, and produced a really taking performance to take last season's Coral Sprint Trophy at York on good to soft. He has not had his conditions on either start since an eye-catching reappearance second, and on that York form he is well treated. A worthy favourite.

Far Above Dream is second on our figure, 0.2lb back, and is a live danger — an improving sprinter who is 21lb higher than when winning on his handicap and stable debut last June, and who went agonisingly close in a York handicap that has worked out extremely well, beating several of today's rivals. He runs off an unchanged mark. Dance In The Storm is third on 108.9 with the best rider figure of the principals at 96, and holds a big chance on form; the doubt is whether he handles the ground, which is why he is staked at half the main bet rather than alongside it.

An honesty note on this race. Our ability figure is built from recent form, and three runners here carry a rating dragged down by a single tailed-off run in a big-field sprint. Spycatcher comes out 22nd of 25 on 93.2 — and he is rated 111 by the handicapper, the highest official mark in the race. Candy, who won this very race a year ago, comes out last on 62.8. Neither figure is an assessment of the horse; both are the mechanism failing on a 46-length and a 65-length defeat respectively. We publish them as they fall rather than quietly adjusting them, and then we ignore them. Wiltshire is affected the same way.

So Spycatcher is on the staking plan despite sitting 22nd on our own rating. He has yet to show his best this year, he is on an interesting mark, and this is his time of year — more so if further rain arrives. Half a point each way at a big price is the right expression of that: a small bet, openly made against our own number, with the reason stated.

Forty-eight pounds covers the twenty-five, by far the widest spread of the day, and almost all of it is at the bottom: the first six are inside four and a half pounds. Binhareer and Far Above Dream are the only two horses in the race top-three on both the overall figure and the conditions column. Stratusnine tops the conditions reading at 74.1 but has the weakest yard and rider figures of the principals.Verdict

Binhareer 2 points each way. Dance In The Storm 1 point each way. Spycatcher ½ point each way. Binhareer taken to run them ragged, with Dance In The Storm the main danger. At the prices it is possible to cover both, and Spycatcher is worth a small each-way interest at a big one.

Turners Parks Group Handicap (Div 2)

A tenth of a pound again, and again we prefer the second

Sierra Sands is top rated on 84.2 by 0.1lb and has the best conditions reading in the race at 67.7. His mark has come down again and he is starting to look workable — he won a Newmarket handicap off 82 and races off 83 today.

Old Is Gold is preferred. He has been on the up since the visor went on and made all in a seven-runner handicap at Goodwood over six furlongs on heavy eleven days ago, only being closed down late having been well clear two out. A 5lb rise is fair rather than punitive, Billy Loughnane takes the ride, and the yard and rider figures of 92 and 96 are the best in the race by a distance. A tenth of a pound is not a bet in either direction.

Conundrum Consulting Handicap

Nineteen runners covered by eight pounds — an imponderable, and we treat it as one

Aalto is our top rated on 93.0, a position he inherits with Castle Rock withdrawn. He landed the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket for a second time, having also won it in 2024, and has run well in two starts at Ascot since — third in the International Handicap in July and third again in a valuable classified event fifteen days ago. Ryan Moore takes the ride and he is drawn one.

Mr Writer and Yes I'm Mali are both within a pound and both look capable. Eight pounds covers nineteen runners. We are happy to call this the hardest race on the card and leave it there.

Aalto's conditions reading of 56.4 is below the race average; Mr Writer beats him on that column by nearly eight pounds. Castle Rock's withdrawal did not change the order at the head of this race.Verdict

Halliwell Jones Handicap

Three horses inside 1.2lb, all with a case

Elegant Erin is our top rated on 82.3 and draws the inside stall. She goes well at Beverley and was a good three-quarter-length fourth of eight to Jm Jungle in a Listed race there over five furlongs on heavy twenty days ago at 28/1. Cheekpieces go on for the first time and she is back in handicap company.

Sudden Flight is second on 81.4 and tops the conditions column at 69.5. He won twice on the all-weather over five and six furlongs last year, has been runner-up three times over six on turf this season, and ran another creditable race when fifth of ten at Goodwood over the same trip last time. He is fast enough for the drop back to five and is well drawn in three. Over Spiced is third on 81.1, has placed on six of her last seven starts, and was desperately unlucky at Goodwood eleven days ago when beaten only a neck without a clear run.

Maharajas Express came out of this race, which tightened it rather than opened it up. Twelve and four-fifths of a pound covers the twelve, and the first three are inside 1.2lb. Elegant Erin and Sudden Flight are first and second on both the overall figure and conditions — the only pair on today's card to do that.Verdict

Turners Cesarewitch Trial Handicap

The one race where a non-runner changed our top-rated horse

This needs saying plainly. On the overnight figures Percy Shelley was top rated. With In The Breeze withdrawn the race average moved, and Premiere Ligne now heads our figure on 85.3, 0.2lb in front of him. That is not a change of opinion, it is a change of field, and two tenths of a pound is well inside the noise.

Neither horse persuades us. Percy Shelley is not the most straightforward and is passed over. Premiere Ligne is retried in cheekpieces today, which is not a vote of confidence from connections either.

Appier is the one we would side with — third on our figure at 84.2, 1.1lb off the top. He made a winning start for Tony Carroll at Goodwood over a mile and three-quarters on heavy in June and was far from disgraced when in the frame over the same trip at Sandown and back at Goodwood since. He steps up in distance in a refitted hood and should give his running. That is a description of a solid horse, not a bet.

Six runners after the withdrawal, covered by nine and a half pounds, with the first three inside 1.1lb. Gooloogong and Squire Danagher are both rated 89 by the handicapper — the two highest official marks in the race — and come out fifth and sixth on our figure. Over two and a quarter miles that gap between the official view and ours is worth watching.Verdict

Six of those points are win-only and seven are each way in the Gold Cup. None of the win bets to be taken at odds-on. A selection is our opinion about a horse; a bet is our opinion about a price — and eleven of the seventeen races above carry a selection with no stake against it.

Eight of those eleven have our top-rated horse less than a pound clear of the second, and four are inside two-tenths. On a card of this quality that is not indecision — it is the figure doing its job and telling us where it has nothing useful to add.

About the OOS rating

The figures in the tables are our own. OOS blends a horse’s ability, how well today’s conditions suit it, and the strength of its yard and rider into a single number, set on the official-rating scale of the race it runs in. Cond scores ground, trip, class, draw and likely pace shape from the horse’s own record under each. Trn and Jky are current form figures for the trainer and jockey.

The strip above each table is that race’s whole field, from its lowest OOS figure to its highest, with every runner marked — the green tick is the top rated, gold marks a horse we have staked. It is there because every figure is read against the rest of its own field, never across races: a 96 at Ayr and an 86 at Newbury are not comparable numbers.
