Ascot Champions Day 2026: OOS Ratings, Race Previews and Selections

OutandOutStayer.com | Saturday 17 October 2026

Champions Day brings together established stars and improving challengers for a compelling afternoon at Ascot. Highwayman’s move into staying company, Almeraq’s sprinting credentials and Talk of New York’s progress provide three of the day’s strongest selection angles.

Below are the leading three horses on our OOS overall ratings in each race, with Lilt included as an additional contender in the Fillies & Mares Stakes. The tables also show the conditions, trainer and jockey ratings.

Going: Good, as recorded in the supplied racecard. All times are Ascot race times.

12:55 — British Champions Day Two-Year-Old Conditions Stakes

6f | Class 2

HorseOOS overallConditionsTrainerJockey
Arapaho Gold116.679.46173
Inner City Blues113.170.89893
Night In Vegas111.978.97563

Arapaho Gold — Michael Dods / Connor Beasley

Four successive victories established Arapaho Gold among the leading juveniles, with his Gimcrack success demonstrating both ability and determination. His unbeaten run ended with a close third in the Mill Reef, but conceding weight and continuing to battle gave that defeat a respectable context. Ascot’s demanding finish should give him every opportunity to put his stamina over six furlongs to good use.

Inner City Blues — Charlie Appleby / William Buick

Inner City Blues quickly justified his considerable purchase price with wins at York and in the July Stakes. His Middle Park fifth was a setback, particularly given market expectations, although it followed a lengthy break. He needs to respond more generously under pressure, but greater sharpness after that return could make him a serious threat.

Night In Vegas — Eve Johnson Houghton / Charles Bishop

A profitable campaign has highlighted Night In Vegas’s toughness and reliability. He has combined respectable Group-race performances with three valuable sales-race victories, most recently when successfully stretching out to seven furlongs at Newmarket. This requires another step forward, but his recent winning form earns him considerable respect.

Verdict: Arapaho Gold heads the OOS figures and brings the most persuasive combination of proven quality and suitability for a stiff six furlongs. He is the selection, with no bet advised.

Selection: Arapaho Gold — no bet

13:30 — British Champions Long Distance Cup

Highwayman129.172.96873
Gregory124.868.49684
Opportunity123.462.38867

Highwayman — Joseph Patrick O’Brien / Dylan Browne McMonagle

Highwayman’s rise has been striking, with successive increases in distance unlocking substantial improvement. His St Leger victory completed a hat-trick and suggested that stamina is becoming his greatest asset. Two miles presents a fresh test, but the way he finished at Doncaster makes this a logical next step. He leads both the OOS and conditions figures among this trio.

Gregory — John Gosden / James Doyle

Gregory has returned from a prolonged absence with two Listed victories, the latest an emphatic eleven-length success over two miles at Newmarket. That performance suggests plenty of his old ability remains intact. His Queen’s Vase win supplies valuable Ascot experience, although this represents a considerable rise in opposition from his recent assignments.

Opportunity — William Haggas / Tom Marquand

Opportunity has developed into a much stronger performer this season, winning at Royal Ascot before finishing a close third in the Ebor while conceding weight to the winner. His willingness to keep responding at York offers encouragement for this first attempt at two miles. The distance and Group 1 company ask new questions, but his improvement gives him a credible chance of answering them.

Verdict: Highwayman’s progress may have further to run now that he tackles two miles. Gregory is a respected danger, but the younger stayer earns the vote.

Selection: Highwayman — 1pt win

14:05 — British Champions Sprint Stakes

6f | Group 1

Almeraq132.971.49562
Paborus128.872.05868
Division126.767.69581

Almeraq — William Haggas / Tom Marquand

Almeraq already has a major course-and-distance success on his record, having won the Jubilee at the Royal meeting. He subsequently produced an outstanding display in Haydock’s Sprint Cup, beating Paborus decisively. The softer surface suited him particularly well there, so drying conditions introduce some uncertainty, although his Ascot victory shows he can deliver on quicker ground too.

Paborus — Ed Bethell / Daniel Tudhope

Paborus remains relatively lightly raced and has established himself as a capable sprinter this season. A Group 3 victory at Newcastle preceded his second to Almeraq at Haydock, where he finished comfortably ahead of the remaining runners. That gives him a sound claim to consideration, but reversing a defeat of more than four lengths requires meaningful improvement.

Division — William Haggas / James Doyle

Division’s losing sequence disguises several competitive efforts at a high level. He went close in France during the summer and has also shown that Ascot suits him. His recent Bengough fourth came after being left with plenty of ground to recover, while traffic affected his Commonwealth Cup challenge. A well-run race and a clear passage could bring him firmly into contention.

Verdict: Almeraq’s best form sets a demanding standard, and his proven effectiveness at Ascot strengthens the case. He is one of the afternoon’s principal selections.

Selection: Almeraq — 2pts win

14:40 — British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes

Kalpana131.476.06866
Minnie Hauk127.074.18096
Sparan Nua127.063.15975
Lilt — additional selection120.367.18764

Minnie Hauk and Sparan Nua share second place on OOS. Lilt ranks seventh overall and is included as our selection. I think Lilt will be freshest of the contenders and expect a big improvement for the Haggas filly.

Kalpana — Andrew Balding / Colin Keane

Kalpana seeks a third consecutive victory in this contest and has already reinforced her affinity with Ascot by winning the King George this season. She followed up in the Yorkshire Oaks before finishing below her best in the Arc. Her strongest performances give her an obvious chance, but the demands of her campaign and the quick return from Longchamp leave something to weigh up.

Minnie Hauk — A P O’Brien / Ryan Moore

Minnie Hauk’s second to Ombudsman at Royal Ascot showed that she retains considerable talent. Reproducing that performance would make her competitive, but consistency has been elusive this season. Kalpana has finished ahead of her on their last three meetings, and a revival is needed to turn those results around.

Sparan Nua — J S Bolger / Rossa Ryan

Sparan Nua came close to upsetting Kalpana in the Yorkshire Oaks, finishing powerfully and narrowly failing to get there. That remains the clearest evidence of her ability to threaten the leading contender. Her subsequent Vermeille performance was disappointing, so the central question is whether she can recapture the level she reached at York.

Lilt — William Haggas / Tom Marquand

Lilt brings a different profile, with relatively few races behind her and scope to improve over this longer distance. Her staying-on second in a Curragh Group 2 represented another encouraging step, following a respectable French Oaks effort. She has shown a tendency to hang right, which needs managing, but her recent finishing efforts suggest that a mile and a half could unlock more.

Verdict: Kalpana deserves her position at the head of the OOS table. The selection, however, is Lilt, whose potential improvement over this trip provides the angle against more established rivals. She must bridge a clear gap on the published figures.

Selection: Lilt — 1pt win

15:20 — Queen Elizabeth II Stakes

Gstaad134.174.68495
Talk of New York131.675.89997
Rayif129.657.16158

Gstaad — A P O’Brien / Ryan Moore

Gstaad’s Irish 2,000 Guineas victory and a series of strong efforts in major mile races establish a substantial form base. His Moulin disappointment was unusual for such a dependable performer, and a return to his customary level would make him difficult to dismiss. He tops the OOS rankings and already knows what it takes to win at Ascot.

Talk of New York — Charlie Appleby / William Buick

Talk of New York arrives after an authoritative Group 2 success at Newmarket that suggested his development is gathering pace. His earlier Royal Ascot third demonstrated Group 1 potential, while his Goodwood defeat was more encouraging than the result alone implies. Settling remains important, but he combines progressive form with particularly strong trainer and jockey ratings.

Rayif — F H Graffard / Christophe Soumillon

Rayif has made a considerable impact in a short career, winning both the French 2,000 Guineas and the Jacques le Marois this season. He remains unbeaten in two attempts at a mile and has already proved effective on good ground. This is another demanding examination, but his record leaves room for further progress.

Verdict: Gstaad holds the highest OOS figure, but Talk of New York’s recent improvement earns him the selection. His Newmarket performance suggests he is ready for another serious attempt at this level.

Selection: Talk of New York — 2pts win

Ombudsman138.870.69796
Constitution River136.672.39398
Bay City Roller135.473.97989

Ombudsman — John Gosden / William Buick

Ombudsman has produced exceptional performances over this course and distance, winning the last two editions of the Prince of Wales’s Stakes. His latest York fourth was less convincing, although the race did not unfold comfortably for him and softer conditions offered another possible explanation. Back at Ascot, he has a strong opportunity to reassert himself.

Constitution River — A P O’Brien / Ryan Moore

Victories in the French Derby and Eclipse advertised Constitution River’s considerable ability. Two subsequent third-place finishes have tempered expectations, with racing freely and hanging left complicating those performances. If he channels his talent more effectively, his earlier achievements make him a formidable opponent.

Bay City Roller — George Scott / Oisin Murphy

Bay City Roller has maintained a high standard through a demanding campaign, highlighted by his emphatic Coronation Cup win and Arc second. The latter performance suggested enough pace to make this shorter distance a realistic option. The more immediate concern is how he responds just thirteen days after a demanding race at Longchamp.

Verdict: Ombudsman’s Ascot record and leading OOS figure make him the selection in a fascinating contest. Constitution River and Bay City Roller ensure a searching examination, and no bet is advised.

Selection: Ombudsman — no bet

16:35 — Balmoral Handicap

Gavriel126.755.19254
Scoville126.566.18747
Hickory124.757.72663

Gavriel — John Gosden / Robert Havlin

Gavriel has progressed quickly, winning on his handicap debut at Ascot before finishing a close fourth in the Cambridgeshire. He was the first horse home from his group at Newmarket, adding substance to that effort. A modest rise in the weights leaves room for another competitive performance, although the return to a mile presents a different test from his recent races.

Scoville — William Haggas / Tom Marquand

Scoville confirmed the promise of several better-than-the-result efforts when winning at Doncaster last month. He travelled with authority there and appeared to have something in reserve. A four-pound rise demands more, but his limited racing leaves open the possibility that he can improve again. He sits just behind Gavriel on OOS and has the stronger conditions figure.

Hickory — Jamie Osborne / Saffie Osborne

Hickory’s experience at Ascot is a significant asset, with two course-and-distance victories this season contributing to an excellent campaign. He was unable to land a meaningful blow over seven furlongs here last time, but his late progress suggested he remained in form. Returning to a mile should help him make better use of his strengths.

Verdict: Very little separates Gavriel and Scoville on OOS. Gavriel’s scope for further improvement and his Cambridgeshire effort secure the vote, with Scoville the principal danger among the leading trio.

Selection: Gavriel — 1pt win
